Feature: New Developments at AltTox.org

home page screen shotIf you rarely venture closer to AltTox.org than the AltTox Digest, we invite you to explore the "new" web site, relaunched on August 25 with a new design and organization.  We've made the site easier to navigate, easier to read, and easier to use and share the hundreds of articles on toxicity testing endpoints, emerging technologies, and regulatory developments.

  • The “Toxicity Testing Resource Center” (TTRC) has been renamed and reorganized for user convenience; visit the “Methods, Approaches, Programs and Policies” (MAPP) section to see what we mean.
  • "The Way Forward" series of invited commentaries is now called "New Perspectives."
  • "In the Spotlight" will continue to feature brief reports on recent meetings, and technical and policy developments.
  • The “Meetings & Events” page remains one of the most comprehensive calendars of in vitro and in silico-specific conferences, workshops, and webinars on the Internet.
  • The highly informative “Resource Center” (previously called “Informational Resources”) was also updated.
  • The “AltTox Forum” will be moving soon to the “Community Blog.”  When it does, we'll post details on where to access the AltTox Forum archives.
  • We've introduced a new feature, "Journal Watch," to highlight recently published articles on innovative, non-animal approaches to regulatory toxicity testing.
There have been changes behind the scenes, as well.

We are pleased to welcome Bas Blaauboer, PhD, to the AltTox Management Team. Dr. Blaauboer is Professor of Alternatives to Animal Testing in Toxicological Risk Assessment at Utrecht University’s Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences, and Editor of the journal, Toxicology In Vitro. The Management Team plans and reviews all content on AltTox.org.

AltTox also welcomes three new experts to the Editorial Board:
  • Joshua Harrill, PhD, is a toxicologist at the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health (CTEH), LLC, with expertise in in vitro methods, neurotoxicity, and informatics.
  • Joao Barroso, PhD, is a scientist at EURL-ECVAM, with expertise in skin and eye irritation, integrated testing strategies, and EU regulatory policy.
  • John R. (Jack) Fowle, III, PhD, is an independent consultant in regulatory science, toxicology and risk assessment, and a former senior environmental science manager with the US EPA.
Finally, we gratefully acknowledge the vision and dedication of Dr. Martin L. Stephens, founder of AltTox.org and a vital Editorial Board and Management Team member for the last seven years. Marty has resigned his position to make more time for his other projects. We will miss him tremendously, but wish him the very best!
Survey on use of alternative technologies in toxicity testing
Researchers in the UCLA Sustainable Technology and Policy Program have asked us to share their invitation to participate in an international survey on the use of non-animal alternative approaches in toxicity testing.  The team is especially interested in "information regarding ...views on alternative approaches and about the various factors that drive or inhibit their adoption. We are surveying members of various scientific societies and professional associations to gather information about these issues."
