NEW: Chappaqua Farmers Market - Roast your roots!

farmers market headerCollege applications are due, the woolens need to brought down from the attic, the days are getting shorter, and the holidays are creeping up. Sometimes you just need a quick and easy dinner that's also healthy and satisfying. Enter Kimchi Culture and their life-saving braised short ribs. Wow. I worked an extra-long day this week and was so grateful for this delicious ready-made dinner, such a better option (plus quicker, and less expensive) than take-out! Serve with rice or creamy polenta and bok choy or braised chard. And just be grateful.

NCHS - Meet our Local Veterans

Veterans day flyerOn November 11, 2019, the New Castle Historical Society will host a “Meet our Local Veterans” program at the Millwood Fire House.

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the first celebration of Armistice (Veterans) Day. During the interval of interwar peace between WWI and WWII, “Armistice Day” was declared a federal holiday to commemorate the official end of WWI on November 11th, 1918. American society is currently more socially disconnected to the military than at any time since that interval between the two world wars.

Although we now celebrate Veterans Day each November, American society lacks an understanding of veterans and their experiences, causing veterans to be viewed in the abstract rather than as the community members that they are.

Veterans Day honors the courage and sacrifice of all the men and women who honorably served in the military during times of war or peace. This day is a special reminder to show our appreciation of these brave members of our community.

During this public program, local veterans will share their stories in a space in which they can be heard by our local community. This public program encourages our local community to gain a better understanding of the experiences of the veterans in our community. Following the stories, a brief reception will be held to allow veterans and audience members to meet and further discuss their experiences.

The event is free and open to the public. It will be held at the Millwood Fire House at 2:00 pm on Monday, November 11, 2019. For further information, please visit or call (914) 238-4666.

CVAC Blood Drive

CVAC logoThe Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Houlihan Lawrence are hosting a fall community blood drive with the New York Blood Center on Saturday, November 16th from 9:30am-2:00pm at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin Parish Hall located at 191 S Greeley Avenue (next to Bell Middle School). Approximately 2,000 units of blood need to be collected daily to supply area hospital patients. As our blood supply always needs to be replenished we are encouraging those who can donate to please do so, especially before the holiday season.

Donating blood does not only help the patients who receive the donation directly but their family and friends as well. It’s truly a positive ripple effect of one random act of kindness. To donate you must be at least 16 years of age. 16 year old donors require parental consent on NYBC form. Donors age 76 or over may donate with a note from their physician. Please bring a friend (or two) who can also donate along with valid photo ID.

Sign ups appreciated, walk-ins always welcome. Click here to sign up. You can also contact Marc at, call 1-800-933-2566 to sign up. Please help us by being a LifeSaver.

NCHS - “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic

Sunday, November 3rd, Film Screening: “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic” at the Bedford Playhouse Theater (633 Old Post Rd, Bedford, NY 10506)

On November 3rd, 2019, the Bedford Playhouse Theater, in collaboration with the New Castle, Bedford, and Mount Kisco Historical Societies, will show the award-winning 2018 documentary “All Things Bakelite: The Age of Plastic.” Following the screening, Executive Producer, Hugh Karraker, will discuss the making of the film and answer questions.

This joyous and provocative film tells the story of Belgian-born American chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland, the “father of modern plastics.” In 1907, he made one of the most transformative discoveries of the 20th century in his Yonkers-based lab: Bakelite, the world’s first wholly synthetic plastic.

While 2019 marks the 110th anniversary year of the Bakelite patent, the influence of Baekeland’s discovery can still be observed in our daily lives. The film captures both the wonder and the curse of Baekeland’s biggest invention and its impact on our lives today.

The event will be held at the Bedford Playhouse Theater, 633 Old Post Rd, Bedford, NY, on Sunday, November 3, 2019 (final showtime will be released closer to the event date). Tickets will be available on the Bedford Playhouse Theater website.

Food Scrap Survey - Win a $25 Amazon Gift Card

composting kitThe Sustainability Advisory Board would like your input on the Food Scrap Recycling Program. Take this quick 10 question survey and you could win the $25 Amazon gift card just for participating. NO purchase necessary. Please share this link with your friends and neighbors. So far the town has returned about 50 TONS, 100,000 pounds of food waste to nature by composting. This compost, used by farmers, saves the use of artificial fertilizers which damage the health of your food and the environment.

Meatless Mondays- Reduce your Carbon Footprint Further

meatless monday logoOne of the reasons the Sustainability Advisory Board decided to bring the Meatless Monday Challenge to New Castle is to see how much our community could reduce their carbon footprint by swapping out meat one day a week. Another tip to reduce your carbon footprint is to buy local veggies and locally raised meat (for the other 6 days/week) at the Chappaqua Farmers Market. Buying food from local farmers and producers helps to reduce the number of miles your food travels, reducing the CO2 emitted getting it from the farm to your table. You also benefit from fresher, better-tasting, and more nutritious food, while more food dollars stay within our communities. Pick up a butternut squash from the Farmers Market this weekend and make our feature recipe: Roasted Butternut Squash Soup (we also recommend grabbing a loaf of bread to go along with it). Sign up for the Meatless Monday Challenge today!

Our local restaurants are excited to support your Meatless Mondays! Check out these featured dishes for the week of 10/21:

  • Bobo’s Cafe (Chappaqua Train Station): Vegan Sausage and Broccoli Rabe
  • Le Jardin Du Roi (95 King St): Beyond Meat Burger

The Biggest Little Farm Movie Screening

the biggest little farmFriday, November 22 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

The Chappaqua Library presents a free screening of the documentary film The Biggest Little Farm on Friday, November 22, 2019, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center, 480 Bedford Road, Chappaqua, New York. Before the screening guest speaker Allison Turcan, Founder of D.I.G. Farm in North Salem, and host and producer of the podcast Getting Dirty, will discuss what it takes to be a local farmer.

The Biggest Little Farm chronicles the eight-year quest of John and Molly Chester, as they trade city living for 200 acres of barren farmland, and dream to harvest in harmony with nature. Through various hardships, and a vast learning curve, they embrace opportunities provided by nature’s conflicts. With the help of biodynamic expert Alan York, they uncover a biodiverse design of living that exists beyond the farm.

This screening is co-sponsored by the Town of New Castle, the New Castle Sustainability Advisory Board, the Greeley Sustainability Club, and the Friends of the Chappaqua Performing Arts Center.

The screening and discussion are free and open to the public. For more information go to or contact the New Castle SAB at
