Join Us in Bucharest on 18 September to Debate the Rights of EU Citizens Abroad

As part of the U-Impact project "From Citizen Involvement to Policy Impact”, our partner in Romania, the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux (NACAB), is organizing a policy debate entitled ‘EU Citizens' Rights Abroad: Know your rights and act upon them!’

The policy debate will take place in Bucharest on 18 September and will focus on the rights EU citizens’ are entitled to when living in other Member States, with a particular emphasis on the rights tied to free movement. The debate will also address the accessibility of information about these rights and the role and coordination of the various networks providing information and advice to EU citizens in this respect.

The event will bring together, via live or online interventions, citizens and representatives of the civil society from all the 9 countries engaged in the project, as well as MEPs and other relevant experts.

Migration Crisis Fuels Mistrust Among EU Member States

This Summer has been full of stories detailing the recent influx of migrants into the EU—with each day bringing stories of larger numbers of migrants entering countries, and larger numbers of bodies being found. Hundreds of thousands of migrants have entered the EU this year fleeing from a range of countries from Syria to Eritrea. But not all of those who try to enter the EU are able to make it—with hundreds of bodies turning up over the past few months, their locations spanning from the sides of roads to the shores of Libya—this crisis has left Europe in a state of emergency.

EU Rights in the Spotlight

On 2 September 2015 the European Court of Justice delivered an important judgement related to free movement rules in the EU, following a request for a preliminary ruling submitted by the regional administrative Court of Lazio (Italy).

The request for a preliminary ruling concerned the interpretation of the Council Directive 2003/109/EC concerning the status of third-country nationals who are long-term residents in the EU, and in particular the provisions relating to the conditions for issue and renewal of a residence permit.
