Today's Actionable: Think Like Your Ideal Client
When we're creating content, we can get so wrapped up in it that it can be difficult to step back and read it with fresh eyes - we're simply too close!
However, there are a couple of ways you CAN step back and try to see what your potential new client or subscriber see when they land on your site.
1. You only have 5 seconds (or less 😩 ) to make it clear what you do. Go to your homepage or your blog feed page. Is it crystal clear?!
2. Write down one of the top problems your client is seeking a solution for - describe it in the most practical terms. Imagine you're them and this issue is eating you up. Go to your homepage - can you find a description of the solution or problem within 5 seconds?
3. Ask 10 friends & family members to go to your homepage and then explain what it is you do. Always entertaining!
4. Find a child and tell them what it is you do in the simplest, most straightforward terms. See if your (borrowed) child understands!
"My kids often teach me. They just don't understand what a copywriter or content strategist is - it's so alien! 'Do you copy people, Mummy?' etc. So, now I often introduce myself by simply saying 'I'm a writer. I help business owners with their stories and writing.' " - Jeda Pearl
While you might not actually use the last two responses word-for-word on your site, the exercises can help get into the mind of someone who doesn't really understand what it is you do. And, often, clients are in that position - it's their problems/solutions that are at the front of their minds.
Going forward, try to make every effort to write with your audience in mind.
