61st annual District Art Show goes virtual

The District Art Show is an ongoing tradition that began in 1959. It was started by Battle Ground High School art teacher Bob Peck, in collaboration with Battle Ground city librarian Florence Rieck, as a way to share our students’ artistic talents with the community. The District Art Show has morphed and grown over the years and is still a favorite event for students, parents, teachers, and community members alike.

This year, due to the public health crisis and school building closures, Battle Ground Public Schools is presenting the art show in an online format. Pieces will not be judged this year, but participants will receive a Certificate of Participation. The district also added a Remote Learning category to showcase student artwork that has been completed at home since school buildings closed. Visit the district website to attend the art show.
BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted special and regular board meetings on May 19 and 26. Highlights from these meetings are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. The next regular board meeting will be held on Monday, June 8 at 6 p.m. via video teleconference.

Sidnie Boadwine’s story starts with a strike and ends with a pandemic.

The 18-year-old Battle Ground High School senior has had a front-row seat to some of the most consequential events for her school district. Since she was sworn in as a student representative to the school board in 2018, she’s lent her perspective as the board has responded to boundary changes, sexual health education curriculum and the novel coronavirus pandemic.

It’s an intersection of student and government leadership that Boadwine said has given her a deeper understanding of policy, as well as a sense of power in advocating for her fellow students. Read the rest of the story on The Columbian's website

ICYMI: Superintendent Mark Ross on reopening schools in the fall

As we near the end of the year, many are wondering what school will look like in the fall. We are developing plans for a few possible scenarios in Battle Ground schools, while a Reopening Washington Schools workgroup is meeting simultaneously to discuss guidelines at the state level. I am honored to have been selected as a participant on the state workgroup, and am proud to represent Battle Ground schools and other districts in southwest Washington as we inform recommendations for public education during the health crisis.
