Graduation 2019: Superheroes in the halls

A Special Project from The Columbian by Katie Gillespie and Adam Littman

Graduates, assemble! The endgame is here for Clark County graduates, who in a matter of weeks will be collecting their diplomas, flipping their tassels and turning the page on a new issue of their life stories. This year, The Columbian is featuring five outstanding graduates who have proven themselves to be heroes. With hard work and positive outlooks, they’re fighting supervillains like substance abuse, poverty and, in one case, an actual fire. Read on to see how these graduates are working to make the world a better place

The Columbian wrote another Special Project piece featuring five more BGPS graduates. Read "Not all heroes wear capes" here.

Focus on outstanding schools

Four Battle Ground schools recognized by state

Four schools in the Battle Ground Public Schools district have earned awards as State Recognized Schools for the 2017-18 school year, ranking them among the highest performing schools in the state in terms of growth and achievement.

CAM Academy was recognized for high achievement in English language arts, math, graduation rate, and School Quality and Student Success (SQSS) measures; Yacolt Primary was recognized for growth in the Washington School Improvement Framework (WSIF) metrics while narrowing the gap between the highest and lowest performing student groups; and Daybreak Primary and Laurin Middle schools were each recognized for closing gaps and demonstrating improvement among student groups identified for support. Battle Ground fourth graders find fun at district's Career Exploration Fair

It was all fun and fabulousness on Monday as more than 800 fourth graders from Battle Ground Public Schools converged at the district's first Career Exploration Fair to learn about the kinds of activities that employees take on in a variety of job fields.

Coordinated by the district's new team of primary school counselors alongside high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, the fair featured 19 stations led by CTE students and teachers as well as local businesses and agencies. Fourth graders arrived on buses from the district's seven primary schools throughout the day to explore careers.

Prior to the event, all fourth graders completed a lesson with their primary school counselor that included a Career Interest Survey. From the survey, students identified their top three Career Clusters and were matched with three stations to visit during the career fair. The students also had the opportunity to visit a career station of their choosing.

Battle Ground Public Schools' departments of Social Emotional Learning and Career and Technical Education coordinated the event to create excitement around what they want to become when they grow up. See more photos from the Career Exploration Fair on our Facebook page

Watch AFJROTC cadets' annual Pass in Review ceremony

Congratulations to the BGHS and PHS AFJROTC cadets on another successful Pass In Review ceremony last Saturday morning at District Stadium! Pass in Review is a long-standing military tradition that began as a way for the newly assigned commander to inspect troops. The district uses this tradition to celebrate student accomplishments and dedication to the AFJROTC program.

The event also highlights the change of command for each corps unit. Battle Ground’s Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Tyler Venneri relinquished command and incoming Cadet Major Hailey Hamilton assumed command for BGHS. Prairie’s Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Garate relinquished command and Lieutenant Colonel Dakota Sipe assumed command for PHS. The AFJROTC program is part of the district’s Career and Technical Education Department.
