Amboy Middle School assembly celebrates student success

Amboy Middle School celebrated some impressive student accomplishments at a school-wide assembly this morning. Principal Nick Krause and Assistant Principal April Vonderharr announced the students who made the First Semester Honor Roll (3.0 to 3.49 GPA) and Principal's Honor Roll (3.5 to 4.0 GPA). Students were called to the front of the auditorium and were given a certificate and a handshake/high 5 from their teachers in recognition of their academic achievements.

Certificates were also presented to students who earned citizenship awards in recognition of their positive attitudes and leadership in class, and to the students with perfect attendance for the semester. Great job, Eagles! Visit our Facebook page to see more photos from the assembly

Focus on teachers

Four Battle Ground educators earn National Board Certification

Four educators from Battle Ground Public Schools earned certification in 2019 from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). This accomplishment marks the successful completion of a rigorous, one-to-three year program aimed at honing teaching techniques and styles that bolster students’ enthusiasm for learning.

National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential that goes beyond state licensure. Only about 40 percent of educators earn the certification on their first attempt. Battle Ground Public Schools now has 47 National Board Certified Teachers.

“National Board certification is a big deal,” said Deputy Superintendent Denny Waters. “We are fortunate to have teachers who care so deeply about their craft and who are always working to get better. Our students are certainly the biggest beneficiaries.”

Battle Ground’s 2019 recipients are:

Meadowlark Clark, kindergarten teacher at Tukes Valley Primary School
Kathleen Ogg, kindergarten teacher at Pleasant Valley Primary School
Katie Prill, third grade highly capable teacher at Captain Strong Primary
Benjamin Scott, instructional coach at Tukes Valley Primary School

AFJROTC cadets reach semi-finals of StellarXplorers competition

For the second year in a row, a team from Battle Ground High School's AFJROTC program has reached the semi-final round of the StellarXplorers Challenge, a national space system design competition. To reach the semi-finals, the BGHS cadets placed in the top 64 out of 231 teams from JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, and STEM school programs across the United States.

Pictured from left to right are cadet Seamus O' Neil, advisor Braden Morrison (2019 BGHS grad), and cadets Jarrett Huntington and Wyatt Moody, posing with team mascot, Cali. The team successfully completed 6 events, each consisting of between 4-6 hours of problem solving and solution building using software actually employed by NASA for launch and satellite operations.

StellarXplorers is a national program aimed at STEM schools that places students in hands-on learning experiences to develop commercially valuable skills in space engineering and satellite operations.

Tukes Valley Primary 'Heart Heroes' raise $7,629 for heart health

Tukes Valley Primary School students may not be your typical caped crusaders, but they have certainly earned the designation of being "Heart Heroes" after working hard to raise $7,629 for people with special hearts in need of care. The Kids Heart Challenge is an annual event that raises funds to benefit the American Heart Association. In addition to Tukes Valley Primary School, students at Maple Grove, Yacolt, Captain Strong, Daybreak, and Pleasant Valley primary schools all took part in the drive and collectively raised thousands of dollars. That certainly qualifies as heroic to us!
