Amboy Middle students collect 1,434 socks for Socktober

Socks are one of the least donated items in homeless shelters, yet are among the most-needed. Socktober was launched several years ago by "Kid President" creator Brad Montague to address this issue, and it's really taken off. Last year, more than 10,000 schools, families, businesses, and churches rallied together to bring Socktober to life, and people from every state and continent have taken part in the drive since its inception.

Donated socks will be made available to local families and students in need through the district's Family and Community Resource Center (FCRC). If you are interested in donating new socks or blankets as part of this drive, or are in need such items for yourself or your family, please contact the FCRC by calling 360-885-5434 or emailing

Focus on safety

Glenwood Heights students learn bus safety from one of the best

As the bus arrives at Glenwood Heights Primary School, fourth graders Kendall Reiners and Ravneet Dhaliwal spring into action. Walking with a sense of purpose to the front of the bus that is packed with kindergarten through fourth grade students, these girls are on a mission. As soon as the bus door swings open, Kendall and Ravneet lead their peers off the bus and down the sidewalk a safe distance, where they all line up and wait patiently and quietly for help to arrive.

Thankfully this scenario was just a drill, and the kids on driver Helen Peterson’s Route 87 bus passed with flying colors. This week in Battle Ground Public Schools, thousands of students and dozens of drivers participated in a variety of bus safety and evacuation drills.

Tukes Valley teacher Kendra Vaught awarded teacher appreciation grant

Congratulations to Tukes Valley Middle School teacher Kendra Vaught for being selected as the recipient of TwinStar Credit Union's/'s Teacher Appreciation Program grant for October!

Here's what Principal Brian Amundson had to say about Mrs. Vaught in her winning nomination: “Kendra regularly goes above and beyond for her students. She works tirelessly to find new ways of engaging her students in math and science. Her car is usually one of the first in the lot and the last to leave. Kendra is a true teacher at heart and will do anything for her students. She is one of the best teachers I have ever worked with!” You can read more about the grant program and Kendra's selection at Clark County Live's website.

Each month, school Principals, admins, and/or PTA boards/members can submit the name of a deserving teacher to receive a $250 grant to use for education opportunities for their students.
