Replacement Levy Community Forums

The community is invited to three upcoming events to hear about the replacement levy on the Nov. 2 general election ballot and to ask questions of Superintendent Denny Waters and district administrators. There will be two in-person forums, the first on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Prairie High School and the second on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Yacolt Primary. For people interested in attending a community forum remotely, one will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, Oct. 6. All meetings will begin at 6 p.m.

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting on Sept. 13. Highlights from this meeting are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m.

Daybreak Primary students celebrate Dot Day

Students at Daybreak Primary had a spot of fun this week celebrating International Dot Day. The event, which has become popular in schools around the country, was created by Peter H. Reynolds, author of the popular children's book "The Dot." The book follows Vashti, a young girl who feels she can't draw, until a simple dot sparks her creativity.

Dot Day at Daybreak was started by art teacher Cheryl Feucht, who posted colorful dots made by students around the school, and even arranged for students to watch a live interview with Reynolds. Check out a fun video of the day on the Battle Ground Public Schools YouTube page.

Battle Ground High School cadets earn their wings

Three Battle Ground High School students recently completed an unusual 8-week summer experience as part of the Air Force Chief of Staff Flight Academy Private Pilot Scholarship. Brooke Kirby and Wyatt Moody (class of 2021) and returning senior Nathaniel Davis were competitively selected from over 1,200 candidates to attend the flight training and earn their private pilot's license. Kirby and Moody both completed four years in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC), and each has been selected for a full university scholarship sponsored by the Air Force.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for high school students and we are very proud of all the cadets who competed for this coveted scholarship," said Lieutenant Colonel (ret) Andy Woodrow, senior aerospace science instructor at Battle Ground High School. The program is designed to select cadets who are potentially interested in an aviation career and expose them to flying operations as well as programs and infrastructures around aviation. Students interested in more information can contact Lt. Col. Woodrow at 360-885-6535.
