Chief students develop Emoji campaign to help manage emotions

Chief Umtuch Middle School's DREAM Team wants their peers to know that they are not alone in what they are feeling during the pandemic. To get the word out to students learning at home, the team has developed a social-emotional campaign featuring expressive and relatable emojis on a series of trading cards that will be distributed in grab and go lunches beginning next Friday.

From happy and sad to "meh," each card features one emoji and a corresponding emotion with information on how to identify, process, and manage that feeling. The goal is to help provide support for the social-emotional needs of every student that the team can reach at home.

Two CAM seniors named as 'Commended Students' by the NMSP

Congratulations to CAM Academy seniors Taylor Nielson and Drake Ashford on being named as Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program! Nielsen and Ashford join Battle Ground High School seniors Alexander Forstrom, Olivia Ledbury, and Gabrielle Steinbrenner and Prairie High School Senior Zane Grevstad on this year's list of students to earn the distinction.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2021 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed in the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2021 competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Bargaining Update

Battle Ground Public Schools has been meeting since early June with the Battle Ground Education Association to develop a contract, and the meetings are now open to the public. The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 6 at 4:00 p.m. To join the virtual meeting, register online here.

While progress has been made (a total of 78 proposals were introduced by both teams and 20 remain under discussion), the two proposals identified by the BGEA as their highest priorities — student discipline and staffing student health services — remain open. Sign up for Parent Academy classes on remote learning tools

We are pleased to share that the next round of Parent Academy with three new courses begins Monday, Oct. 5. These online classes are specifically designed to help you navigate and understand the tools that your students will use during remote learning. The classes are taught via Zoom by the district's own technology education trainers and coaches.

The classes focus on helping parents and guardians understand the curricula, technologies and instructional practices that our teachers use for instruction so that parents can help at home. The new courses cover Skyward for Parents, Imagine Learning software, and social-emotional topics.

You can see the schedule of classes for the next two weeks and read the course descriptions below. Sign up for classes using our Parent Academy Google Form. An invitation to the Zoom class will be sent to your email address at least 24 hours prior to the start of your selected session(s).
