If showing up is half the battle, these Wolverines are poised to succeed

Right before winter break, 332 students at Chief Umtuch Middle School celebrated their excellent attendance record! These middle schoolers had at least 95% attendance during the second term, which is a great accomplishment that is definitely worth recognizing! Well done, Wolverines! While we're at it, we'd like to mention how good the new logo looks on the gym floor.

Focus on board excellence

BGPS' Board of Directors receive state award

January is National School Board Recognition Month, and we are so pleased to announce that Battle Ground Public Schools' Board of Directors has received a Board of Distinction Award from the Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA) for its work in 2018-19. The award recognizes school boards that use research-based governance practices that lead to high levels of student and district achievement.

BGHS students impress at annual Poetry Out Loud competition

At Battle Ground High School’s 10th annual Poetry Out Loud competition last month, senior Amy Eells (pictured above, middle) took first place for the second consecutive year! Eells' winning recitation was “Mansplaining” by Jennifer Militello. By winning the competition at BGHS, Eells advances to the regional finals on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. at ESD 112, 2500 NE 65th Ave., Vancouver.

Finishing in second place was senior Katherine Gamblin, who recited "Say Grace" by Emily Jungmin Yoon, and third place went to Alyssa Wilson who recited "Virtuosi" by Lisel Mueller.

To prepare for the competition, students memorize classic or modern poems that they recite before a panel of judges. The competition is set up much like a spelling bee: students first compete in class, with winners moving on to a school-wide competition. The winners at the school level have the opportunity to advance to regionals, state and nationals.

Thanks to the amazing video production class at BGHS, you can watch the entirety of the competition online

Student artists' work featured at Rose City Classic Dog Show Jan. 15-18

Congratulations to Laurin Middle School students Michelle Babiy, Gracie Harp, and Sarah Makunin! Their artwork was selected to be displayed January 15-18 at the 2020 Rose City Classic Dog Show at the Portland Expo Center. The Rose City Classic Dog Show is one of the four largest all-breed dog shows in the United States. This year's art contest theme is "Dogs with Jobs!".

Michelle, Gracie, and Sarah competed against other middle school artists from the greater Portland Metropolitan area, including students enrolled in private art schools. Michelle Babiy’s pencil sketch (pictured above) took 4th place among the 5th and 6th grade entries, while Harp and Makunin each received Honorable Mention designations for their respective grade levels.
