Help us celebrate our amazing administrators with National Principals Month

We might be a bit biased, but we think we have the best principals and assistant principals on the entire planet! Join us in showing these dedicated, caring professionals some love this month using #ThankAPrincipal on your favorite social media platforms.

Focus on teaching

Special education teacher pens book about his struggles with anxiety, and the students who help him overcome it

When he was a high school student in Beaverton, Ore., Chief Umtuch Middle School special education teacher Brad Smith signed up to be a peer tutor for students with special needs. He figured that it would be a good experience to connect with and help his peers. What he wasn’t expecting was that this seemingly inconsequential decision would entirely change his life’s trajectory.

Get to know Captain Strong's new assistant principal, Neil Varble!

Neil Varble is the new assistant principal at Captain Strong Primary. Varble has taken over for Jennifer Kerr, who is on a leave of absence this year. Before joining the BGPS district, Varble was a fourth grade teacher in the Kelso School District. We asked Neil to tell us some things that people might not know about him. Check out his answers to get to know a little more about one of our newest administrators!

BGPS students to participate in the Great Washington Shakeout Oct. 18

Communities and schools across Washington will participate in the Great Washington ShakeOut earthquake drill next Thursday, October 18 at 10:18 a.m. This is the seventh year the state has participated in the drill. During the drill, communities, families, businesses and schools will practice their drop, cover and hold skills.

It is also recommended that area residents make sure they are prepared for a disaster by storing enough food, water and supplies. Emergency Management has expanded the recommendation from having three days worth of supplies to having two weeks worth. For more information and additional resources, please visit https://www.shakeout.org/washington/.

Fourth graders invited to America's natural wonders and historic sites for free

Calling all fourth graders! This is your year to visit our nation's national parks and monuments. The federal government gives free annual passes to fourth graders (and their families). All you have to do is get an adult in your family to help you go to www.everykidinapark.gov and answer a few questions about outdoor adventures. What a great opportunity to visit Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks right here in our own state!

Fourth grade teachers also can download and print paper passes for each of their students.
Join the BGPS Team! Many positions are now available, including an assistant school secretary, four education assistants (for bus duty, a crossing guard, a lunch/recess supervisor, and student specific), five swing shift custodians, a community education facilitator, a gym recreation facilitator, a middle school office assistant/basic education assistant, nine special education assistants (3 baseload and 6 student specific), a business office technician, an HVAC technician, two assistant coaches for track and wrestling, 2 head coaches for baseball and girls wrestling, certificated substitutes (including a JROTC position), and classified substitutes (including crossing guards and custodians).
