PVP Reading Intervention Specialist launches book club to inspire love of reading

Lindsey Riolo knows that building a strong foundation of reading and comprehension skills contributes to students’ long-term academic growth. These skills benefit her students not only while they are at Pleasant Valley Primary School, but in all their years in Battle Ground Public Schools and beyond.

As a reading intervention specialist, Riolo helps students who need a little extra assistance with developing proficient reading skills. This year, Riolo also launched a book club that PVP students can join, creating opportunities for them to bond over a shared love of books and storytelling. Read more on the district website

BGHS senior advances to State Finals in annual Poetry Out Loud competition

Congratulations to Battle Ground High School senior Bethany Tuchardt on advancing to the State Final round of the annual Poetry Out Loud competition! Tuchardt won BGHS' local competition with her recitation of Claudia Rankine's poem "Don't Let Me Be Lonely," to advance to the SW Washington Regional Finals. As one of the top three finishers at the regional competition, Tuchardt earned a spot in the State Finals. Presented in partnership with ArtsWA, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is a national program that encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance and competition. Best of luck at state, Bethany!

Reminder: Applications for District 1 School Board seat are due Tues., Feb. 23

Battle Ground Public Schools is accepting applications for Director District 1 to fill the vacancy on the district’s Board of Directors. The Board will accept applications for appointment to this position through Feb. 23. Appointment is for approximately 8 months. The position will be up for election in the 2021 primary and general elections. Term of office for the winner of the November 2021 general election will be four years.

Nominate the next regional teacher and classified school employee of the year!

Nominations are now being accepted for ESD 112’s 2022 Teacher of the Year and 2021-2022 Classified School Employee of the Year. Each award is presented to an exceptional teacher and classified school employee in Southwest Washington every year. The winner of the regional awards will proceed to the prestigious Washington State competition in the fall.

School districts and community members are encouraged to submit nominations on the combined nomination form from OSPI. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 2021. Visit the ESD 112 website for more information and links to the nomination form

Battle Ground School Board agrees to wait on running replacement levy again

Bypassing April, the levy could run again in August or November

Facing potentially crippling budget decisions, the Battle Ground School Board elected to hold off on putting their replacement four-year Educational Programs and Operations Levy in front of voters again in April.

The levy fell short during the Feb. 9 special election, with 52.43 percent of 20,441 voters saying no. Battle Ground was among 46 districts in the state running at least one local levy this month, noted Deputy Superintendent Denny Waters during a presentation to the Board of Directors on Tuesday. All but four of those levies around the state passed. Read more on Clark County Today's website
