Levy funds support Battle Ground’s focus on social-emotional learning

Middle school students brainstorming ways they can provide emotional support to fellow students they’ve never even met. Seniors banding together to encourage freshmen who are struggling to adjust to the academic rigors of high school. Fourth graders transforming their school’s courtyard with brightly painted rocks adorned with encouraging messages to build a more positive school culture.

These are all recent examples of highly successful programs in Battle Ground Public Schools that support the social-emotional well-being of students.

The district is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students, families, and staff. One of Battle Ground Public Schools' strategic goals is to support and promote the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students and staff. The goal is second only to academics. BGHS' annual Poetry Out Loud contest goes virtual, winners announced

Congratulations to Battle Ground High School senior Bethany Tuchardt on placing first at the school’s 11th annual Poetry Out Loud competition! By placing first at BGHS, Bethany advances to the regional competition to be held online in early-to-mid February.

Tuchardt's winning recitation was "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" by Claudia Rankine. Placing second at BGHS' competition was senior Alexander Forstrom and his performance of "In the Past" by Trumbull Stickney.

To prepare for the competition, students memorize classic or modern poems that they recite before a panel of judges. For safety reasons, this year's event was held virtually, with students recording their performances in advance and the judging taking place via Zoom. Best of luck at regionals, Bethany!

BGPS' school nurses receive COVID-19 vaccine

In accordance with Washington's vaccine distribution plan, all nurses and LPNS in the district have been vaccinated, and health room assistants and isolation room attendants were due to be vaccinated this week. These staff members come into close contact with students who are sick, and are as essential as it gets to helping maintain the health and safety of students and staff returning to the classroom.

Battle Ground Schools has joined with neighboring school districts in advocating for all school staff to be vaccinated at the same time, regardless of their age group. The district has volunteered its services, facilities and sites for mass vaccination events, and is hopeful that the state will help streamline this process to allow for all public school employees to receive the vaccine as soon as possible.
