Focus on veterans

Battle Ground school events honor veterans

Battle Ground Public Schools’ students and staff will honor veterans during school events, including assemblies and a panel for high school students. Community members and veterans are invited to attend. Schools will be closed on Monday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Get event details on the district blog.
BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting and work session on Monday, Oct. 28. Highlights from these meetings are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. The next regular board meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. on the Lewisville campus. Please note the next meeting is on a Tuesday due to the Veterans Day holiday.

BG students learn about digestion through firsthand experience

Emily LeFrancq, a local pediatric nurse living in Woodland, painted a vivid picture of what it’s like to live without a stomach for seventh grade students at Battle Ground Public Schools’ Laurin Middle School. In 2018, LeFrancq learned that she has a genetic mutation that significantly increased her risk of developing life-threatening stomach cancer. As a preventative measure, she was given the option to have her stomach removed. She opted to go through with the procedure and is now adapting to life with an altered digestive system. She visited Laurin Middle School, at the invitation of seventh-grade science teacher Gregory Glascock, to share her story and respond to students’ questions. Read more on the ESD 112's website

PHS Cross Country teams sweep the district championships

Congratulations to the Prairie High School Cross Country teams! Both the boys and girls teams won their respective district championships last week, and seniors Luke Lund and Meri Dunford each won their individual championships. The teams leave this Friday, Nov. 1st for the regional competition at Chambers Bay golf course in Tacoma. Best of luck, Falcons!

BGPS and Prevent Together host vaping info event

Battle Ground Public Schools and the Prevent Together Coalition are teaming up to host a parents-only event that will provide critical information and awareness about youth vaping and substance use. “Vape 101: What Every Parent Should Know” will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14 at Tukes Valley Middle School and includes an interactive exhibit, an expert presentation about vaping, and a panel discussion with an audience question and answer session.

Beginning at 6 p.m., parents and adults are invited to walk through a mock adolescent bedroom to try and spot the signs of vaping and other substance use. This interactive “Hidden in Plain Site” exhibit is open for 30 minutes before the presentation begins, and again at the conclusion of the presentation and Q & A session.
