Levy dollars keep the arts at center stage in Battle Ground schools

Art, music, and drama classes are about more than just learning an instrument, singing, painting, or acting. For many students, those programs mean an opportunity to find community, learn more about themselves, and sometimes even overcome personal obstacles.

“It helps people find their confidence, find their voice, find who they want to be,” said one BGHS drama club student. "It just feels like home,” said another.

Local levy dollars help to provide for programs such as drama, music, and art. If a replacement levy fails to pass on Nov. 2, the district would lose more than $28 million in funding next year, potentially limiting access to a number of extracurricular programs students currently enjoy. Visit the levy information page on the District's website for more details on the local levy and what it helps to fund.

In our latest "Know the Facts" video about the replacement levy on the Nov. 2 ballot, Kevin Jolma explains why levy dollars are key to improving student security and making sure the community's investment in district facilities is handled wisely.

For the past several years, the district has been working to make security improvements to schools and catch up on a backlog of maintenance leftover from when the district experienced double levy failures. gs.

More levy informational meetings in the next two weeks

Superintendent Denny Waters and other district leaders gave an informational presentation this week on the replacement levy and answered questions from the community. If you missed out, there are two more community meetings scheduled. A remote meeting via Zoom will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, and there will be a second in-person meeting at Yacolt Primary on Tuesday, Oct. 12, also at 6 p.m. Child care will be available at that meeting for those who need it.

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a work session and a regular board meeting on Sept. 27. Highlights are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.

Pleasant Valley Fun Run

Students at Pleasant Valley Primary had a blast on Friday, Sept. 24 participating in the annual Fun Run fundraising event. They even had some sunshine and warm weather. As of this evening, the school had nearly hit its $15,000 fundraising goal. If you'd like to sponsor a student (or Buddy the beaver), you can do so through Cheddar Up.
