Middle School Sports launch relies on levy funding

Nearly 40 years since a double levy failure forced Battle Ground Public Schools to eliminate middle school sports, the district is ready to re-launch them, thanks to an investment made by the Board of Directors in 2019. The pandemic delayed the launch, but boys and girls basketball seasons are set to begin in the winter. However, all coaches and athletic advisors in the district are paid for entirely through levy funding, along with most student transportation. If a replacement levy on the Nov. 2 ballot fails to pass, the district would be forced to further delay the launch of middle school sports indefinitely. In our latest "Know the Facts" video about the replacement levy, we learn about the importance of sports to students and middle school communities. For more information on the replacement levy, visit the district's Levy page online.

Remember to VOTE by Nov. 2

If you haven't already, please remember to fill out and return your ballot by Tuesday, Nov. 2. If you haven't received a ballot, or it was lost or damaged, you can contact the Clark County Elections Department for a replacement by calling 564-397-2345 or visiting them online. Registering to vote or changing your voter registration information is still available by visiting the Clark County Elections office in person at 1408 Franklin St. in Vancouver until 8 p.m. on election night.

Ballots can be returned by mail, no postage required, as long as they are postmarked on election day. They can also be returned to a number of drop boxes around the county. The Clark County Elections website has a map with a list of drop box locations. Thank you for voting!

Prairie's Manny Melo wins statewide recognition

October is National Principals Month, and we know all of our building administrators deserve to win awards. Last week, Prairie High School assistant principal and athletic director Manny Melo was recognized by the Association of Washington School Principals as one of the top administrators in the state, in his first year as an assistant principal. Prairie Principal Susannah Woehr said Melo implemented a wildly successful participation punch card program for athletics and activities, encouraging students to show up to events and support each other. "Coming back from online learning has been tough for some students to adjust to," Woehr said, "but the community-building efforts Mr. Melo is leading is why we are incredibly lucky to have him as our AD/AP!"

Battle Ground School Board recognized as WSSDA Board of Distinction

The Washington State School Directors' Association (WSSDA) has recognized the Battle Ground Schools Board of Directors as one of 34 Boards of Distinction for 2021, and the only large school district (9,001+ students) in Clark County to receive the honor.

"The boards that are being honored developed unique approaches that reflected the needs of their students and families and relied on careful analysis of data that indicated those needs," said WSSDA Director of Leadership Development Tricia Lubach. “Despite historic challenges this year, school boards displayed tremendous leadership in bringing students back to in-person learning safely and creatively."

Battle Ground's Board of Directors, in cooperation with district leadership, helped keep students connected with wi-fi hotspots, buses as internet hubs, school meals, and much more. All 34 boards will be honored on Nov. 19 during the WSSDA Annual Conference.

Yacolt Primary students enjoy on-campus pumpkin patch

Kindergarten students at Yacolt Primary School couldn't get to a pumpkin patch this year, so their teachers and the Yacolt PTO brought the pumpkin patch to them! Thistle Creek Farm offered up pumpkins at a steep discount and even delivered them. The PTO then stepped up to pay for the pumpkins and volunteered to help with activities including pumpkin bowling, a photo booth, and more. Fire District 13 also showed up with a fire engine for the kids to check out.  Thanks to everyone who stepped up to make this a special event for our Yacolt kindergartners.
