Five-day in-person learning starts April 26

(The district brought desks from other schools to provide enough lunch seating at Yacolt Primary School. Even though the distance has been reduced to three feet between students in classrooms, six feet of space is still required during lunch, in common areas and in classes such as PE and performing arts.)

All of our schools are moving to full in-person learning five days a week starting Monday, April 26. Getting to this point has required a massive effort on the part of all our dedicated school employees, from moving lots of furniture around to setting up schedules and so much more. Thank you to all our staff for their efforts to prepare for 5-day learning!

Despite all the work, our staff members are very excited to see our student's bright-eyed faces. Parents should have already received communication with schedules for their student's school(s), as well as bus route information and updated schedules for free meal pick-ups. If you haven't, all of that information is available on the district website.

COVID-19 vaccines now available for anyone over 16

Everyone 16 years and older is eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine in Washington state. There are multiple options for seeking COVID-19 vaccination appointments. Visit the Clark County Public Health COVID-19 vaccine webpage to find a location and get more information. NOTE: The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is currently the only version approved for 16 and 17-year-olds.

For those looking to schedule an appointment, Clark County Public Health is holding a community vaccination event this Saturday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fruit Valley Community Learning Center, 3410 NW Fruit Valley Road in Vancouver. Appointments must be scheduled in advance online, or by calling (888) 225-4625. Appointments are also available through the Tower Mall community vaccination site, which is open Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday each week.

High School plant sales months in the making

(Battle Ground High School agriculture lab assistant Sherry Moore-Smith cares for hanging baskets ready for sale this weekend)

The annual plant sale at Battle Ground High School will likely be over within a handful of hours this Saturday, April 24, but prepping for the yearly event started way back in October. With high schoolers learning remotely until March 15, staff members like agriculture lab assistant Sherry Moore-Smith stepped up to do the prep work students would normally handle. Hours of Battle Ground High School's sale are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Be sure to check out the video we put together showing the work that went into this year's sale.

With student help limited, staff focused their efforts on hanging flower baskets, producing over 1,000 of them for sale. Students are now back in the greenhouses and working to set up for the sale, as well as planting vegetable starts, most of which they will be able to take home for their own projects.

Prairie High School will have a wider variety of plants available over several days, by appointment only. As of right now, there are a limited number of slots still available online.

Battle Ground High School graduate's art a real bright spot

2019 Battle Ground High School graduate Tommy Tikka was beloved for his sunny disposition and zest for life during his time as a student. Now, he's becoming well known for his sunny paintings and other artwork. The 19-year-old who lives with Down's Syndrome recently decided his lone ambition is to become a famous painter. He may not be world famous just yet, but his paintings, calendars, keychains and other items have been hot sellers here in Battle Ground. Tikka even sold a painting to Principal Heather Ichimura, which hangs in the hallway at Tukes Valley Middle School.

Tikka's mom, Sarah, recently told that Tommy's obsession with art began last October when he started painting on some chunks of wood. Now, their house is filled with artwork supplies and paintings continue to pour from Tommy's creative mind, through his brushes.

Tommy has a display set up at Rusty Glamour in Old Town Battle Ground, and sells items through his very own website as well.

“He started getting orders, turned into a famous painter and he’s not looking back,” his mom told Clark County Today. “And it’s the funniest thing because he has no self doubt. He knows he can do it. There’s no question.”

Comprised of current River HomeLink freshmen twins Jackson and Jessica Carter, as well as 2020 RHL graduate Isabelle Carter and 2017 grad Kathryn Carter, the sibling group continues to make sweet string music together. They've also put together stirring renditions of "Be Thou My Vision" and "The Blessing" on their YouTube channel.
