Battle Ground School Board races on Aug. 3 primary election ballot

For the first time since 2015, two Battle Ground school board seats will be on the primary election ballot on Tuesday, Aug. 3. Four candidates have filed for the District 1 director seat, currently held by Mary Snitily. Snitily is running along with Devin Scroggins, Chloe Seppala and John Siemssen, Sr. The two candidates with the most votes in the primary will go on to the general election on Nov. 2. In the race for the District 3 director seat, currently held by Troy McCoy, who is not running again, Tori Denfeld has announced she is effectively withdrawing from the race. That leaves candidates Ted Champine and Diane Langan still in the running. Statements from most of the candidates are available in the primary election Voter's Guide sent out by Clark County Elections, or on the department's website. Please remember to vote on Aug. 3!

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting on July 26. Highlights from this meeting are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is now available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on Aug. 9 at 6 p.m.

Generous donations help supply Battle Ground students

The generosity of our Battle Ground community will once again provide hundreds of students in the district with free backpacks and basic school supplies to start the new school year. The Battle Ground Education Foundation's annual supply drive saw hundreds of donations from the community, as well as 526 backpacks given by Battle Ground Foursquare Church, a $4,000 gift from Lewis River Rotary, major donations by Battle Ground Lions Club, Fargher Lake Grange, Bethel Lutheran Church and multiple pallets of surplus school supplies donated by the Battle Ground Walmart store. Volunteers from Lewis River Rotary and GFWC will fill donated backpacks with basic supplies next week and then hand them out to qualifying students August 16-19 at schools around the district. Families of students who qualify for free or reduced meals can register to receive supplies through July 31 on the district website, or by calling the Family and Community Resource Center at 360-885-5434 after Aug. 1.

Prairie High School welding and machining class receives large donation

Prairie High School's welding, engineering and machining classes, part of the district's Career and Technical Education program, recently received a $3,000 gift from the Islam Family Foundation, a nonprofit out of Bremerton, Wash. that has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to schools across the state. Teacher Rob Smith said the Islam family has contributed more than $80,000 in finances and equipment to the program over the decades, including 3D printers, milling machines, and robotic arms.

"Time after time when we've needed something, Marc (Islam) and Hilary (Harter) have stepped up to help out," Smith said, who was also recently recognized as the 3A state coach of the year by the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association. "They make a huge difference in the lives of our students."

Gifts of more than $2,500 in value must be approved by the district's Board of Directors. The Islam Family Foundation gift was approved during the June 28 regular board meeting.
