Update from the
Head of School
Fairfield has started 2017 with a strong focus on literacy, with a range of unforgettable experiences that I am sure will last a lifetime.
The term started with students and staff being treated to one of our numerous author visits when Bristol born author Huw Powell picked Fairfield as the place to be for the official launch of his exciting new book 'The Pirate King – a part of the Spacejackers series. Huw engaged students from Fairfield and our feeder schools with details of his new book, spent time talking to individual students and signed copies of ‘The Pirate King’.
Even more memorable has been the Harry Potter Book Night sleepover on February 2nd, with over 45 staff and students recreating Hogwarts at Fairfield. Year 7 students at FHS (and some of its student librarians) dressed staff in robes. They hunted for pixies, discussed their favourite passages of the books and chose their favourite story to watch. Definitely a night to remember.
Equally remarkable has been the publication of Year 7 and 8 students work in the Young Writers 'Busta Rhyme' poetry anthology. Powerful poems demonstrate the skill Fairfield students have for this literary art form and it’s been a joy to read the winning work.
Between the literary visitors we even managed to welcome a former Cabinet Minister - Lord Jim Knight who is Chief Education Advisor for TES Global (a dynamic, digital education company committed to supporting teaching & learning). Lord Jim toured our school and helped us strengthen our links with careers and employability.
On a final note, we are introducing a biometric cashless catering system which will rapidly speed up the delivery of school lunches and make payment simpler and speedier. Can I ask you to return consent forms back to school by Friday 24th February ready for us to launch in the new term.
After such an action packed term I am looking forward to an equally amazing rest of the year.
Mr Nick Lewis
