Update from the
As I write I am surrounded by Christmas trees, jumpers and decorations on our charity Christmas jumper day. Last Thursday the Atrium was packed with families and students enjoying the high-quality dance and music performances at the Winter Gala. There was also a German market which raised money for a languages trip to Hannover. Well done to all performers and helpers.
Other events this term include the award of a prestigious STEM Engagement Badge, recognizing the work our Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths teachers with STEM Ambassadors, a visit from the Old Fairfieldians on Remembrance Day, when the whole school marked the two minute silence in a moving ceremony, the Children in Need appeal where students raised £1,120, a trip to Cologne to practice German and see the famous Weihnachtsmarkt, a performance by our students at the Tobacco Factory as part of the Shakespeare in Schools project, our musicians performing at the world-famous ‘Sanctum’ installation (the only secondary school to do so!), the award of Lottery funding to develop our allotment and a trip to Bristol Uni to learn about Women in Science, Maths and Technology.
This term we have been introducing the practice of mindfulness with Year 7 students. Evidence shows that the practice of mindfulness can help students learn, support good behaviour for learning and help them regulate their feelings. There are lots of good resources online if you would like to try it at home: a good place to start is http://bemindful.co.uk/ but there are lots of other resources. Please let us know how you get on!
We have received the latest data from the DFE which analyses schools’ performance and, once again, our students performed significantly above the national average achieving a 'value added' score of 1021.6 for 2015, placing us in the top 19% of schools in the country.
We continue to focus on every individual child achieving their potential. We are working closely with the Excalibur Academies Trust to ensure that our students benefit from collaboration and opportunities across the Trust.
Once again, record numbers of parents have applied to join the school next September and we anticipate being fully or over-subscribed. We wish everyone in our community happy holidays and a refreshing break, and look forward to the new challenges and excitements of 2016.
With best wishes to you all,
