Starting up a network - do you have a champion?
test
It might seem easy to build a network for industrial symbiosis: invite some key stakeholders to a couple of meetings and the rest will come of itself? Unfortunately that is not the case.  The truth is it takes a lot of efforts, time and determination to start-up and maintain a network. It takes a champion, but not only that, it takes a group of key stakeholders who all play important roles of the network. Last year two students at Linköping University (Swe) finalized their master thesis titled “Industrial symbiosis as a business concept”, which focused on how a recycling company can facilitate the development of regional industrial ecosystems. Based on an extensive literature review this thesis identified different types of key stakeholders and highlighted their respective relevance and importance for a successful network. At an EPIC transnational network meeting; the roles of key stakeholders and their importance was discussed. It was concluded that there is a variation how networks are built, and certain types of stakeholders can take on different roles, so it is useful for all networks to map its members in order to grow in a beneficial way. more >>

Mantova's port: Bioenergy potential and opportunities:
Mantova is the only river port of the project. Even though it is the smallest among them, its bioenergy potential is by far the highest. During the first year of the EPIC2020 project, it was found that the industrial units within the port area do cooperate, exchanging by-products and forming an Industrial Symbiosis Network. The expansion of the city’s District Heating Network creates new opportunities for investment in bioenergy production. During the analysis, several questions arise: how to valorise agricultural biomass; through CHP or fermentation? Is there a company that could be fed with newly produced biogas and what is market demand for bioethanol within Mantova? A brief assessment for this port can be found at the EPIC website. more >>

Malmö : 'shared energy doubles the force'
Swedish innovation agency Vinnova has decided to fund a new smart project in the Northern Harbour area of Malmö. The project, named “Shared Energy doubles the force”, aims at stimulating both industrial symbiosis and the use of smart energy solutions in the harbour area. With this daring plan, Malmö and the energy company E.ON build upon the knowledge and practical experiences gathered during the e-harbours program and the European project EPIC 2020. “Shared Energy doubles the force” reaches out to a new level. Examples of activities in this new project is to further investigate how low grade heat can be utilized in farming and other applications, to bring the smart grid concept developed for homes forward by testing it in industries, and to further investigate market advantages and barriers with industrial symbiosis. more >>
