PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” — Winston Churchill

To all our members, supporters, and fans,

I am thankful for your kindness, time, talent, treasure, sage advice, sweat, and tears that you have happily given to the Junior League of Phoenix.  I am most humbled by all that we have accomplished these past 85 years and this past year in particular and look forward to what we will achieve in 2020.

May your holiday season be filled with peace, magic, gratitude and joy, and shared with loved family and friends.

Warm Regards,

                                                      Wendy K. Brooks

85 YEARS OF JLP
The Junior League of Phoenix is a long-time supporter of the Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a “home-away-from-home,” keeping families together and close to the medical resources they need thanks to the outstanding commitment of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Members of the Junior League of Phoenix volunteer their time to prepare and share a meal with the residents of the Ronald McDonald House, thereby giving them the gift of a home-cooked meal.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Attention Arizona Pre-K to 8th grade teachers!

The JLP’s ROCKETS Teacher Launch, a STEM professional development seminar partnered with AZ Science Center’s CREATE Team will be held on Feb. 28, 2020.

Through the ROCKETS Teacher Launch Seminar, more than 100 preschool and early elementary school teachers in Maricopa County participate in a full-day training seminar that provides non-stop, hands-on science activities. Teachers are empowered to find creative ways to integrate science into their daily lesson plans. The seminar brings science, math, and reading skills to an estimated 1,000+ children per year - making a lasting impact on student’s education for years to come. This is the first year we have a formal partnership with Arizona Science Center's CREATE team and will be offering a full day of continuing education credit. Teachers all receive a full day of CE hours, classroom science kits, breakfast, lunch, parking, and the opportunity to win prizes like classroom field trips.

Breakfast, lunch, classroom kit, parking and a full day of CE credits provided. Email ROCKETS with any questions.

Thanks to the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation for sponsoring this event!

JLP Members Making an Impact

Junior League of Phoenix members have been all over the Valley collecting turkey donations for St. Mary's Food Bank throughout November. We continue to fight hunger and food insecurity through our monthly Community Impact Shifts.
Kids in the Kitchen November Update

KITK-Monthly Lessons had the first annual Fall Fest at Homeward Bound on Friday, Nov. 8. We had more than 70 residents of Homeward Bound join us for dinner, games, and fun for the evening. The 17 families enjoyed Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowls for dinner, played Food BINGO, and the kids played carnival games while JLP member Deborah Stewart Weaver spoke to parents about healthy eating. We wrapped up the evening with make-your-own parfaits. At the end of the night, we were able to provide the families with a brand new set of pots & pans, tons of kitchen utensils and toys for the kids. Our goal was to be able to set the families up for success to talk about healthy eating and provide them the resources to do so.

In Remembrance

Clare Abel
1955 - 2019

Junior League of Phoenix member, Clare Abel, passed away at her home in Phoenix on November 4, 2019 while surrounded by her family. Clare grew up in Pennsylvania but graduated from Texas Tech University. She was a graduate of Arizona State University law school and was a trailblazer for women in the law. She was also very proud of her work as part of the Junior League of Phoenix.

Through her battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, her tenacious, courageous, and unyielding personality persisted. Even on lower-energy days, she was able to muster her favorite words, "I love you."

Support the JLPF and make your Birdies for Charity® Pledge Today!
Help support the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation by making a pledge in the Birdies for Charity® competition! Birdies for Charity® is a pledge drive for local non-profits in which they seek pledges based on the total number of birdies made during the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open. To pledge, each person assigns a monetary value to the number of Birdies, for example $0.01 per Birdie would be a $15 pledge if there were 1,500 birdies during the Open.

What is a Birdie? A “Birdie” is a score of one stroke better than “Par” for any hole on the golf course. “Par is the normal expected score of a golf professional on any given hole.
