Message from the Community Team Leader

March is Nutrition Month –
Remember to Build a Healthy You!

Unhealthy eating and lifestyle habits are contributing to the obesity epidemic in the United States today.  A 2012 CDC study found that 64.8% of Arizona adults are overweight. The same study found that only 24% of AZ adults reported getting the recommended amount of vegetables each day, and 19% said they had not participated in any physical activity in the past month.  The Junior League of Phoenix is working hard to Build a Healthy Arizona by implementing and supporting programs that seek to reverse these statistics and improve the overall health and well-being of our community.
Life is busy. Juggling the priorities of work, family and volunteer commitments can leave us with very little time left over to take care of ourselves. Too little sleep, too much stress, less than healthy take-out meals – we all know how easy it is to fall off track. March is National Nutrition month, which is a perfect time to get back on the right path with regards to making healthy lifestyle choices.
The Junior League of Phoenix has put together this calendar on how to “celebrate” Nutrition month throughout March. A few small changes are all that it takes. Starting your morning with five minutes of meditation, meeting a few friends for a hike, paying a visit to the Fresh Express mobile market to load up on fruits and veggies (go to for the latest bus schedule) – all these little decisions add up over time and help you feel and perform at your best.
Take some time in March to take care of you – every step in the right direction brings us a little closer to our goal of Building a Healthy Arizona.
Be Well!

JLP to Partner with the Children's Museum
for First-Annual SandFest

The JLP is excited to announce our participation in the Children’s Museum of Phoenix’s 1st Annual SandFest, which includes a sandcastle building competition and community “beach party” that will be held the first weekend of May. This event will be outside the museum and is free to the public, and CMOP is expecting over 10,000 attendees throughout the weekend.

The JLP will have a booth at the community partner festival on Saturday, May 2, and will have representatives from both of the League’s signature programs, Kids in the Kitchen and ROCKETS, offering hands-on activities related to the beach/summer theme. Members should look for volunteer opportunities to be posted soon!

This promises to be an extremely fun and unique outreach event, and we are excited to be part of it!

Two Major Events Upcoming for KITK

Kids in the Kitchen is wrapping up the 2014-2015 year with two exciting events. Our final lesson in the KITK curriculum focuses on cultural and media influences on nutrition and healthy habits, and will help students learn to recognize and balance positive and not-so-healthy cultural and media triggers for the foods we eat and the activities we do. We are thrilled to wrap up the pilot curriculum and develop 'curriculum kits' to expand our impact!
We also are hosting a final Healthy Celebration event with the Boys and Girls Club on April 11. More than 100 children from area branches will complete KITK's signature stations to learn comprehensive tips and tools for healthy lifestyles. We will also look forward to honoring the Junior League of Phoenix Foundation for their substantial support this year.
If you are looking for a fun way to infuse healthy ingredients, try some of these fun 'kid sushi' recipes, like the veggie sushi we make at our event!

Fresh Express Committee Focuses on Nutrition and Health Awareness

This year, the Fresh Express Committee designed and implemented creative, educational materials for the customers of the Fresh Express Bus by Discovery Triangle. During the month of February, the JLP’s Fresh Express committee aligned our focus with American Heart Month and Valentine’s Day by providing materials on heart-healthy fruits and vegetables and how to incorporate them into your diet every day of the week. In March, Fresh Express is aligning our focus with Nutrition Awareness Month. The Fresh Express Bus is expanding its service area by launching stops in downtown Phoenix neighborhoods beginning in March. If you would like to see firsthand the work Fresh Express and JLP are doing in the community, sign up for a volunteer shift. Please check Digital Cheetah for dates and times as new shifts are added monthly.
Piñatas and Fun at Phoenix Rescue Mission
The Phoenix Rescue Mission Committee had a delightful time playing games with the families at the Phoenix Rescue Mission on Saturday, March 7.
