2022/23 season kicking off in early August

A heads up that training for the 2022/23 season will commence in early August. We're currently finalising pitch and hall bookings and we'll have confirmation of the training schedules for all codes in the coming weeks. In the meantime, keep an eye on our website calendar

Coaching opportunity with women's footballers

We're still on the lookout for a coach to prepare our women's footballers for the 2022 Australasian State Games.

Our women's footballers are a talented group with years of experience and shed-loads of silverware to their name. They boast the largest numbers of any of our teams and they'll be chomping at the bit to go head to head with the best teams in Australasia.

This is an excellent opportunity for either experienced or fledgling coaches, particularly those who have completed the Australasia GFHA coaching courses in recent years.

So, if you fancy coaching the team at this prestigious international competition, contact Davey Rynne on 021 027 84187 or at president@wellingtongaa.com.

This year's Australasian State Games take place at La Trobe Sports Stadium in Melbourne from 29 September – 1 October 2022.

Australasian Regional Games

The Australasian Regional Games is an annual competition held each November on the Gold Coast. Hosted by the Gold Coast Gaels club, this competition is catered to developing clubs where the majority of players are learning Gaelic games. This year's tournament is planned for Saturday 12 November. There may be an opportunity to send a team or two to this tournament, so we'll keep you updated in the meantime.

Farewell, Mick Geraghty

All the best to Mick and Una Geraghty on their move back to Ireland. Mick has had a great influence on the club over the last decade. The Kildare native coached the women's football team for a number of years and introduced numerous non-Irish players to the game. Over the last number of years, Mick has helped coach kids Gaelic games with Donal Kavanagh on the Kāpiti coast.

RIP Eoin Farrell

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of our former club mate Eoin Farrell.

Eoin was a key member of Wellington/Hutt Valley GFHA between 2011 and 2014. Hailing from Athlone, Co Westmeath, Eoin brought an energy and enthusiasm that was felt by all associated with the club.

Whether it was on the playing pitch, on the committee, or during many of the additional activities associated with the club, you could rest assured that Eoin would be in the middle of it all; driving it forward and having fun.

Eoin travelled to Wellington with his wife Eimear and together they played a large role in the running of the club as well as on the playing fields across New Zealand. There wasn’t any task too large for Eoin to undertake and it was always completed with his trademark smile.

The outpouring of messages of condolences and shared memories over the last number of days shows the high regard in which he was and is held throughout the wider ex-Wellington/Hutt Valley GFHA community.

Eoin was a proud Westmeath man and served his parent club Maryland GAA, as well as Westmeath GAA, with distinction over many years. We were lucky to have shared a number of years with Eoin as a member of our club.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Eimear and the Farrell and Murphy families on Eoin’s untimely passing. We are all thinking of you at this difficult time.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Hutt Valley Irish Society AGM

On Sunday last, the Hutt Valley Irish Society held its AGM. Brian Gahan who has been involved in many joint activities with our club – including the annual golf tournament – has stepped down as President. Catriona Gill, a long-time member of our club, takes on the role of treasurer. We wish her all the best in her new role. We look forward to working with the new committee over the next 12 months and wish them all the best.

Ireland v All Blacks at HVIS

If you won't be there in the flesh, the next best place to take in Ireland's test matches against the All Blacks is at the society on Raroa Road. Doors are open from 6:30pm each game night and the bar will be open. So, if you're out in the Hutt make sure to drop in to catch the games.
