After a three-year hiatus due to COVID, the Australasian State Games returns later this year from 29 September – 1 October 2022 in Melbourne.

We're delighted to confirm that our women's football team will be heading across the ditch to line out in the intermediate competition. This will be the first time since 2015 that our women's footballers will participate at the trans-Tasman games.

Their last outing in 2015 – which we held at Te Whiti Park, Lower Hutt – saw them record a memorable win over NZ rivals Canterbury. In addition, our own Eileen Foyle picked up an All-Star award at the games and went on to represent Australasia at the 2016 world games in Dublin.

The competition will be nine a side with teams allowed a panel of up to 15 players. If you're interested in playing in the most prestigious Gaelic games tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, there's still time to secure your place on the panel. On Saturday 7 May, we joined thousands of people across Ireland and the world for sunrise to walk in support of people affected by suicide and self-harm.

A 75-strong crowd arose in the wee hours to walk the 5km from Odlins Plaza to Roseneath Memorial Park, and back to Odlins Plaza. Thankfully, it was a glorious morning for a walk around the waterfront. And the walk was certainly a success as, between online and cash donations, we raised a whopping $1,600 for Lifeline and Pieta, with the majority going to Lifeline.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the walk, all our volunteers, David Duffy for the photos (coming soon), and a special thank you from the committee to Rachel Kirby who went above and beyond in leading the organisation of the event.

 

Club President Davey Rynne returned home to the Banner county for a holiday recently. Apart from some quality time with family, his highlights included watching west Clare junior B hurling as well as catching up with former Wellington/Hutt Valley club stalwarts such as Robbie English; Justin McDermott; Ciarán Hanrahan; Eoghan O'Leary; and Emmet and Gemma Whelan, who returned home to Ireland earlier this year.

On visiting chez Whelan, Davey took the opportunity to present the two with their club recognition awards which they were awarded in April. Well deserved.

 

Our friends at Super Paddy's FC have decided to refresh their signature São Paulo FC-inspired jersey for the winter season. The updated red and black-striped jerseys exude a winning quality and will surely be the envy of the Wellington Sunday Football League.

In a tribute to former team captain Mike Fahy who passed away last year, his name will feature on the back of the strips. It's a heartwarming gesture and one which we're sure will be appreciated by all who knew him here in Wellington.
