MA Newsletter

June 2015

Summer...a time for family, friends, revitalization...and creative outreach!
What an extraordinary opportunity God gives each of us this time of year for individual and corporate outreach that is casual and intentional.  We have the opportunity to share with friends, neighbors, and co-workers the transforming Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Message from Executive Director, Charles Olcott
This will be my last newsletter written as Executive Director of Mission Anabaino.  I will be leaving my MA post effective July 1st to join the Rivendell Institute at Yale.  It has been a real privilege over the past three years to build on the base the CPC congregation and leadership had established before I arrived in the extraordinarily important area of church planting.  Our MA local and global church pastor partners regularly affirm to me the personal and professional spiritual nutrition they derive from being part of a collaborating, planting network centered on an intentional, persistent, Total Christ/Five Mark missional ecclesiology.  Thank you CPC.

LOCAL CHURCHES
CPC The Hill

CPC The Hill
New Haven, CT
Rev. James Williams

We are very pleased to announce that James Williams, with his wife Barbara, has accepted a call to become Associate Pastor of CPC in the Hill.  The family intends to move to the New Haven area this summer and Pastor James will assume he responsibilities in the Hill church when he completes raising support for his first year budget.  Please pray for a smooth transition for the Williams and early success in James' fundraising efforts.

Chip Anderson, Interim Pastor at CPC in the Hill, with his wife Lisa, continue to be enthusiastically engaged in the worship and ministry activities in the Hill.  Weekly Men’s and Women’s prayer and Bible study meetings enjoy loyal followings as do once-monthly Discipleship, Reflection, and Planning meetings.  "In His Midst," the highly successful BBQ and scripture sharing Wednesday night cookouts begin on July 1st and the Hill church is expecting a good turnout from the neighborhood.

Please pray for:

  • Spiritual growth and continuing Christ-centered, joy-filled activity and worship calendars in the Hill church during this summer season
  • Success in the various outreach events
  • Comfort and wisdom to flow out of the in-home visits Chip makes every week to both the members of the congregation and the un-churched in the Hill neighborhood
  • A deepening sense of family within the congregation.

Rev. Andrew Holbrook

After almost  a year of prayer and planning, our Fairfield, CT church planter, Andrew Holbrook, wife Lauren, and daughters Hattie and Evelyn are scheduling their New England move for the July/August timeframe.   Other news:

  • A team of 5 will move in August to Fairfield to begin serving the community and worshiping at CPC New Haven until the church launches.
  • 100% of first year funds are raised and pastoral apprentice Milas Shepherd, who will be serving college students, has raised 40% of his support.
  • They are making great connections with foundations to help train church members for great community outreach and faith integration in their work.
  • Andrew was accepted into the Southern New England Presbytery in May.
  • The Holbrooks close on a house in Fairfield July 1 and will begin renovations to get it ready for the family and all the hosting they will do over the next few years.

Please pray for a smooth and safe move north for the Holbrooks and a productive start to their early efforts to begin their ministry in Fairfield.

Rev. Kyle Parker

Coram Deo Presbyterian Church in Spokane is eagerly anticipating their weekly public Sunday morning worship schedule initiation on August 20th.  They are also pleased to announce the Call they have extended to Matt Bostrom, a recent graduate of RTS in Charlotte, as Assistant Pastor for University Ministry.  In September, they will be moving worship services to Jefferson Elementary School, which is in the middle of the Coram Deo target area on Spokane’s South Hill.

Kyle requests prayer for quality and quantity family rejuvenation time this summer and success in meeting the significantly increased financial needs these summer worship changes will produce.
New City Presbyterian Church
South Bend, IN
Rev. Luke Potter

Luke led a small team of folks on a mission trip to New City Fellowship in Chattanooga the week of Memorial Day, where they also got training at New City's Urban Training Institute: it was an excellent opportunity to learn from Randy Nabors and the New City Network and to do evangelistic bible clubs in the projects.

During July, they're going to do their own evangelistic bible clubs in South Bend with the New City Fellowship model: this is an exciting area for prayer for them.

Twice a month (second and fourth Sundays) they do 'intercambio meals' (shared meals where the first hour they speak/teach Spanish and the second hour they speak/teach English) as a ministry to their immigrant community. It's gotten to be a great time of ministry. In addition to the relationships they've built with Spanish speakers, they're slowly trying to pull all of their folks into these meals so that they learn enough Spanish to be able to welcome the Spanish speaking community at their services.

They've developed an exciting partnership with an African American congregation in their neighborhood (Luke has gotten to learn from and serve with the pastor over the last 18 months, as they both work with the homeless). They've worshipped with the African American congregation a number of times over the last few months, and they'll be worshipping at New City the third Sunday in July. Pray that that service in July will be a rich one for both communities.

Luke’s wife, Jen, will be finishing her nursing program next month (and will then be studying for the nursing licensing exams, which she'll take in August). Praise the Lord for His faithfulness.

Please pray for a time of rest and wonderful family focus, successful summer outreach activities, and wisdom in the planning process as the church calendar is constructed for the fall.

Rev. Marcel Baptiste

With the help of the South Florida Presbytery, Mission Anabaino is in the midst of sorting out the issues related to successfully re-starting robust worship services at our sponsored New Hope Presbyterian Church in Mirebalais, Haiti. Please pray for a thoughtful and lasting resolution, soon, to the outstanding questions that remain in the way of restarting worship services.

COUNSELING CENTER

While CPC/MA is continuing its nationwide search for an Executive Director for our to-be-established Church-Based Christian Counseling Center an interim strategy is being evaluated researching the feasibility of perhaps starting a part-time CPC-based Christian Counseling Center staffed by qualified, licensed and local Christian counselors. Please continue to pray for a successful recruiting and engagement process for the Center's new Executive Director and initiation of a beneficial part-time counseling center serving the needs of the community.
