Iso Webinar Series
During COVID19 the YLEN committee wanted to ensure we should still provide members with opportunities to connect with professionals in the industry. We have been running the YLEN iso webinar series for two months now and we are so excited about the level of participation we have received from members! We have recently had the following speakers talk to YLEN:
  • Mark Harvey-Sutton - ALEC CEO
  • Melissa McEwen & Tina Hutchison - Live Animal Exports
  • David Beatty & Michael Patching - MLA
We plan to continue this series, running two webinars a month that are free for members to join and participate in. If you have a presenter you would like to see talk to YLEN, please let us know!

How did you get into the Live Export Industry?
I started off in the live export industry on station about 11 years ago, loading and drafting cattle destined for boats. After always sending these cattle to the boat I really wanted to know where they were going and understand our overseas markets. During and after Uni I was working in the CPC finance team where I was becoming more involved with our Indonesia operations. This then led me to take the opportunity to move to the JJAA feedlots in Indonesia where I have lived for the past 4 years

What does a typical day in your role involve?

My typical day is never the same, lots of multi-tasking. Sales planning, profitability, and feeding plans take up a fair chunk. Checking cattle and working with our team to drive operational and business performance in all areas. Analyzing data to make better management decisions and communication between our Indo and Australian operations.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting in the industry what would it be?
Always be thinking of a better and more efficient way to do things, because that’s how you will contribute to continuously improving the industry. And take the opportunities that come your way because it is bound to lead to other things. My favorite quote that has been passed on to me has been “broken window, broken business” which means never walk past something that isn’t right no matter how small because it is those small things that will set the status quo for how everything runs.

What is your career goal?
I want to continue to work in global beef and agriculture production. We will require a lot of innovation and increased efficiencies in the next 30 years to be able to feed the growing world population

Where do you want live export to take you?

I am lucky enough that working in live export has led me to undertake a Nuffield scholarship next year where I will research live export and other agricultural operations around the world. I have also had the privilege of living in Indonesia and learning their business and culture, which has taught me a lot. I am sure working in live export will continue to provide me with lots of opportunities in the years to come.

Why work in live export?
I love working with both our Indonesian team and the cattle we care for. The way they work as a team, care about cattle health and welfare, and adapt to change in a somewhat challenging environment is truly amazing. The most rewarding thing is seeing the thousands of families that are supported by live export through various parts of the supply chain and also in knowing you are producing high-quality beef for Indonesian families.
