Dear <<First Name>>,

Artists around the world are social distancing, or, as we are here in California, on lockdown.

People feel scared and frustrated, and we at New Masters Academy share these feelings.

But we also see that artists are turning this crisis into creative inspiration. There is more activity on our website than ever before, and social media is lighting up with drawings, paintings, and sculptures of artists around the world. We love to see this.

Shakespeare did his best work on King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra in isolation during the Black Plague. We can also use this time to focus and make some of our greatest artistic gains.

Here’s how New Masters Academy is helping:

  1. Art schools around the world are closing down, and many are trying to switch to online learning. Without the experience or infrastructure in place, they are struggling to do so. Because of this, New Masters Academy is working with art schools to provide low-cost group plans to students and faculty. If you attend an art school that has been closed due to the crisis, reach out to your faculty and administration and request that they get in contact with us at johanna@newmastersacademy.org
  2. Starting today, we have made our foundational course: Introduction to Drawing for Beginners free for everyone. There’s no paywall. We don’t ask for people’s emails. Just click and share this link with anyone who wants to learn: https://www.nma.art/courses/a-beginners-guide-to-drawing/
  3. Starting today, I will be giving free critiques to any posts made to the New Masters Academy Open Critique forums here: https://www.nma.art/forums/forum/art-artwork/open-critique/

Let’s continue to support each other in this crisis and challenge ourselves to use our time productively. Rather than obsessively rage-following the news, let’s set up our easels and open up our sketchbooks and show the world why artists are so vital to our society.

Read more about facing this crisis as an artist on Canvas, our online art magazine, in the new article: How To Turn Fear Into Strength As An Artist.

In solidarity,

Joshua Jacobo, and the New Masters Academy team
