Operation Pedestal
Message from the Merchant Navy Association UK
We have been approached by BBC Scotland who are doing something on Operation Pedestal. One of their newscasters, Angela MacClean had a grandfather who was lost on Waimanara, along with all the crew.
We have been asked if we have a survivor in our midst who could be interviewed.
Do we still have anyone out there who can be interviewed, preferably by Zoom?  I know this is a  doubtful ask but  do we have any members who were on that convoy?  We have told her it is doubtful. but prove me wrong please. It's time the general public knew something about the Merchant Navy's essential part in wartime.
Are you or do you know a survivor from the Pedestal Convoy or, failing that, a close relative of a survivor, who would be available to be interviewed by Zoom, possibly within the next two weeks???
Please contact the National Secretary, Davit Parsons, by email at
We regret to record the death on 24 September 2020 of Captain C (Barry) Thompson, Auckland Branch
