President's Message: Do Do say, Do Do do!

President Do Do’s message to all channeled through her creative writing. This time, President Do Do will talk about Mr Coffee & Mrs Water, and BYOWB (帶上自己的水瓶吧!)  to create a more environmental friendly JCIHK office!
Introducing my best buddies in JCIHK Office - Mr Coffee and Mrs Water (reminding you Mrs. Potts and Chip in Beauty and the Beast?)! Serving most and seen by all, they’ve accompanied me through many meeting adventures! But have you noticed their neighbor? Yes! An always full-house litter bin filled with papers and plastic cups!
You may wonder, as Jaycees and active citizens who promote SDGs, we should take the lead to protect our environment and reduce waste! Here’s how to make your event PAPERLESS or Environmentally Sustainable as suggested by the United Nations Environment Assembly:
  • Carbon Neutral : reduce carbon emissions when considering event logistics
  • Paperless: use green certificates instead of paper
  • Plastic-bottle free: BYOWB -Bring Your Own Water Bottle
Our very own JCIHK Memo Bottle composed of environmentally friendly materials and glides effortlessly into backpacks and purses, saving the environment while looking sleek!

When is your peak hour, and how Jaycees comment about you?
Mr Coffee: No doubt, my peak hour is after 6:30 pm weekdays and Saturdays, offering my essence of magic by preventing meetings with people falling into sleep! Some say that my plastic cups are not environmentally friendly but I am inborn with a plastic cup when I am in service. Please  ask Mrs Water, she produces lots of paper waste too!

Mrs Water: BYOWB everywhere! I highly recommend this so you don’t stuff our poor little neighbor who always has his tummy full of paper cups!

Digging deeper into the issue, here's a conversation with Mr Coffee and Mrs Water:

What kind of people do you serve and what is so special about you?
Mr Coffee: We are honored to have served around 2,000 highly motivated and forward looking young men and women who are mostly entrepreneurs or executives from a wide range of trades and businesses. I am special because I multi-task and provide a variety of drinks such as white coffee, cappuccino,  cappuccino with chocolate and hot chocolates -- even hot lemon tea!

UNESCO Hong Kong Association - The 5th Peacemakers’ Cultural Celebration on 18th February 2017

In a splendid warm morning, all OCs of our flagship project - SDG Junior Ambassador Programme 2017 participated in the 5th Peacemakers’ Cultural Celebration organized by UNESCO Hong Kong Association at the Science Park.
This marked the fourth consecutive years for the Chapter to take part in such great event. Through a series of workshops, cultural performances and booth games, the event aims to promote the 17 Sustainable Development (SDGs) to the public. We energetically and thoughtfully designed booth games to draw awareness of SDGs, and plenty of students, school teachers, and some local organizations had shown keen interest in the project! The OC team also successfully solicited new sponsorships and enrolment for the contest on site, which marked an encouraging start of the project!

Community Development Highlight
Care & Dare 2017: FashionABLED - In Fashion, No Difference! (Care & Dare 2017: 時尚共融計劃:愛美無界限) Photoshoot on 26th February 2017

Care & Dare 2017 giving their best shot at studio doing their very first video shooting for CD flagship project. Hong Kong Jayceettes, known to be pioneers aspiring to resolve social issues, will address the challenges disabled people face this year, aiming to present their inner beauty through fashion. We care and we dare to empower those in need.
We are honoured to have Ms Rabi Yim, President of Direction Association for the Handicapped and Mr Ming Chau, Director of Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power, to be featured in the promotion video in our CD Project, FashionABLED. Both of them are great inspirations for the disabled to take as role models of. Through this project, we hope designers will design clothes that cater to target the group's needs, to shine a light and boost confidence in them!

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Junior Ambassador Programme 2017 – Opening Ceremony cum Day Camp on 4th March 2017

What happens when SDGs are introduced to our future leaders of the society? The SDG Junior Ambassador Programme (SDG小專員計劃) knows all about it! Excited and youthful primary students participated in the programme’s Opening Ceremony cum Day Camp, and all we could hear were laughters and discussions full of passion.
After four months of full dedication of the OC team, SDG Junior Ambassador Programme 2017 was kicked off on 4 March. With over 150 guests in attendance, President Do Do pointed out the project aims to echo with United Nations’ initiatives, and to build connections between students and the global policies by promoting SDGs and greener lifestyle in the community. The project focuses on the 5 SDGs relating to environmental issues, and has received tremendous support from over 25 local and overseas organizations as well as great exposure on social and local media!

Presentation to Government
Care & Dare 2017: FashionABLED -- In Fashion, No Difference! Presentation to Government Officials on 8th March 2017

More to go with our CD Project. Not everyone gets the opportunity to meet public figures, especially government officials but as JCI members, we are often granted chances to widen our social perspective. On 8th March 2017, our Project Chairman Phoebe Lee greeted Mr Stephen Sui, JP, Secretary of Labor and Welfare.
Our presentation to the government gained positive and appreciative feedback on the idea to promote inner beauty by bringing out social awareness to  disabled people’s needs in Hong Kong. We also hope that the project will encourage more fashion designers to consider designing clothes that cater to their needs!
MA & Publications Highlight
Member Induction by JCI President Dawn Hetzel and JCIHK President Teresa Poon on 22nd March 2017

Our greatly admired WP Dawn Hetzel stopped by Hong Kong for a visit and induction of our very own Jayceettes Yuki Wong and Marcella Ho to become Full Members! We also got up-close and personal with beloved WP Dawn in an interview!
SNAPSHOTS Editor: With our Publications slogan being Give Your Best Shot, how do you motivate yourself to give your best shot, juggling between a professional career, athletic lifestyle (WP used to compete in Triathlon competitions!), and being an active citizen?

“There are a lot of times when I get frustrated and discouraged … [and] want to quit, ... I try to take a step back and think about the bigger picture. I’ve also been lucky in my life to have good people around me ...to talk me out of the hole and talk me off the edge of the cliff, and remind me what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and why we spend so much time and energy for the organization that we love as JCI.”

And we couldn’t help but say, “the reason that you are surrounded by good people is because you are a great person yourself!”
Now let's see how Yuki and Marcella felt after their one and only induction:

Yuki (L): Absolutely elated and excited, I received the induction certificate with a big and lovely smile from NP Teresa. As an university student, it is never easy to cope with my time to have academics, career and volunteer work at the same time. However, Hong Kong Jayceettes is a family that makes me have the passion and motivation to work around with my timetable and take this opportunity to serve back to the society. Through my chapter, I also hope to strive for women empowerment as I have been a Girl Guide since childhood. I always tell myself, “initiative is doing the right thing without being told”. Jayceettes is a place where I can make dreams come true.

Marcella (R): I am often known to be a shy and reserved girl amongst my peers, receiving the JCI pin from WP made me so nervous! It is my pleasure to be inducted by WP Dawn and NP Teresa, as well being the first two inducted members, along with Yuki in the year of 2017 in my Chapter. I believe that Jayceettes is a place that will bring me opportunities to grow and improve. Through WP reception, I was able to make new friends across different chapters of JCIHK, knowing more about different chapters’ projects and features!
