We had a large number of volunteers for this years RCC shoreline clean up: Mrs. Ono, the Lackmance family, the Vuckovic family, and the Miyamoto family. We'd like to thank all of the participants for their hard work and the difference they are making for our community.

To My Husband

Karnanayaka Wilmawattiz, Sri Lanka

I was born in the countryside of Hadeigarula in 1959. At the age of 23, my dream of becoming a teacher came true and after working for around 10 years, I met my husband. We fell in love and got married in 1994, when I was 35.

The happy marriage began to fall apart as time passed; I started to notice my husband's flaws and as we were both short-tempered, we often go into arguments. Even though I knew that flawless human beings don't exist, I demanded perfection from him.

My husband began to change when he joined Reiyukai in 2000. At the time, I wasn't really supportive of his decision – I did not know anything about Reiyukai's teachings and I didn't like the fact that my husband began to leave the house more often. In 2002, I got pregnant. It may sound a little dramatic but every women must risk their lives when they give birth to their babies. It was definitely a life-changing event and I was scared to death! Luckily, my husband was the one who took great care of me and during my pregnancy he recited the sutra every single day for me to give birth to our baby without any complication. After I had given birth to a healthy baby girl, I decided to join Reiyukai. I began to attend gatherings with my husband, recite the sutra, and participate in membership drives.

It was my husband who made me realize my shortcomings. I was stubborn and didn't listen to other people's opinions – I always thought that I was right! As my husband continued his practice he became calmer, started to take care of his parents, and became an attentive listener. I was surprised how much people could change, once they reflect on their characters and work diligently to improve themselves. Also, I realized that people around me change when I change myself.

I would like to continue applying Reiyukai's philosophy, dedicating myself to work for the people in my workplace and my community. If we all work together, we can improve our society!
