DTL welcomes first five Partners

DTL is proud to announce its first five formal Partners. By signing the DTL Partner Agreement, Delft University of Technology, University of Groningen, Utrecht University Medical Centre, and the companies DSM and Elsevier show their commitment to DTL and its aim to establish a world-class integrated life science research infrastructure.
"The technology and data challenges in the life sciences domain are far too great to be handled by institutes on their own. We need to work together to tackle these problems.", states Professor Karel Luyben, rector magnificus of Delft University of Technology, and Chairman of the DTL Board. He expresses his enthusiasm about DTL: "DTL is the ideal collaborative platform where partners active in separate sectors of the broader life sciences can bundle their efforts and solve the issues at hand in an efficient manner, making sure not to reinvent the wheel over and over again. Besides, it will be much easier to connect our local activities to major international initiatives."  Read more

DTL and ELIXIR-NL kick off - Registration is now open!

On December 1, 2014 DTL organises 'DTL on track' , the DTL and ELIXIR-NL kickoff event in the Rijtuigenloods in Amersfoort. The day will start with a market place for DTL technology facilities, a brokering event in which the facilities and their clients can discuss future collaborative projects.
All life science technologies will be represented: proteomics, medical imaging, computational biology, metabolomics, microscopy and many more.
The DTL Learning event starts at the same time and will highlight training activities in integrated life sciences and will discuss collaborations and new initiatives.  A large part of the day will be devoted to a data stewardship workshop. The actual kickoff of DTL and the launch of the Dutch node of ELIXIRELIXIR-NL is planned in the afternoon.
We invite organisations to co-create the event with us. Please send an e-mail to Mascha Jansen if you would like to receive more information.

Companies interested in presenting their company to an (international) audience of 250-400 scientists, policy makers, and other stakeholders involved in the life sciences, can contact Merlijn van Rijswijk.

More information about the programme will soon be available on our website. You can register for 'DTL on track' via the registration form

Successful first edition of 'Bring Your Own Data' workshop

On 24 and 25 June 2014 the first of hopefully a long series of Bring Your Own Data (BYOD) parties took place in the context of the ELIXIR pilot for a broader data FAIRport. The BYOD workshops are conceived as a low barrier approach to get data owners acquainted with the possibilities opened by 'functionally interlinking' their data with other important datasets. In this first workshop data providers of MycoBase and the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) worked together with experts in semantic web technologies to make their data available in a findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable manner (FAIR). Read more

DTL Course directory

The DTL Course Directory provides a searchable overview of courses, trainings and workshops at the intersection of life sciences and high-end technologies. We are currently building up the directory. The first version of the DTL Course Directory is now online. We can only build the Course Directory with your help, so please take a moment to publish your course(s) using the Course Submission Form.

New Computational Biology online course catalogue

A recent proliferation of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and other web-based educational resources has greatly increased the potential for effective self-study in many fields. A new online catalog is now online of several hundred free video courses of potential interest to those wishing to expand their knowledge of bioinformatics and computational biology. The courses are organized into eleven subject areas modeled on university departments and are accompanied by commentary and career advice.

Meeting DTL Learning programme

On September 24 DTL Learning organizes a meeting to discuss the scope, activities and plans of the DTL Learning programme, help to set directions, and formulate concrete next steps. We aim to form working groups to develop programs around education in areas such as data expert, integrated life sciences and specific technologies. What needs to be done to train people for next generation life science research? We are pleased that several people are already participating in our activities including the Sep. 24 meeting. We welcome everyone who wants to contribute – with ideas and actions! – to DTL Learning.

Life Sciences seminar: 'Kliniek van de Toekomst'

Together with FHI, DTL is organising a Life Sciences seminar at the World of Technology and Science (WOTS 2014) which is organised this Fall at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. Title of the seminar is 'Kliniek van de Toekomst' (Clinic of the future) and focusses on thee rapid medical technological developments – in particular -omics and imaging area – that gradually lead to a changing in healthcare organisation and the medical clinic. e medical clinic. The seminar is organised on October 1st 2014. The program will consist of visionary speakers who take a peek into the future. The seminar is co-organised by DTL and FHI. Registration is free of charge! Read more

DNA-Labs at Exciting Technologies, WOTS2014

At the World of Technology and Science (WOTS2014) the six  ‘Reizende DNAlabs’ will present several interesting aspects of their activities. The DNAlabs invite you to visit their booth at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, from September 30st – October 3. We would like to get to know you and you will learn how the DNA labs reach out to high school students (who are the future life science researchers!) and their teachers, and to the general public.
Please use the following registration link to register (for free):  http://bit.ly/1B0nneu. Read more about the booth presentation here: http://wots.nl/dna-labs/

DNA X-pedition

While visiting the WOTS 2014, you could also consider visiting the DNA X-pedition where you can 'experience' DNA and meet the newest life sciences technologies. Read more

Netherlands Metabolomics Centre continues!

Unilever, DSM, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, TNO, Plant Sciences Group Wageningen and Leiden University have taken the initiative to set up a metabolomics foundation. The mission of the NMC foundation is on purpose broad: to promote, design, initiate and/or execute research, research infrastructures and facilities, education, knowledge dissemination and knowledge application in the area of metabolomics technology and its application in the life sciences. The foundation aims to draft a public-private research agenda, and will look for the most suitable funding options. NMC will connect with other leading groups internationally to participate in Horizon2020 and infrastructure projects, and wants to contribute towards standard setting and distribution of methodologies. Read more

One of the first steps for NMC was to formalise its relation with DTL: the parties recently signed a strategic cooperation agreement. Rob Hamer, director of Unilever Research Vlaardingen and chairman of the NMC foundation, "The main driver for this cooperation is our strategic fit. In Europe, more and more emphasis is put on the cross-technology applications of advanced technology and data research infrastructures across life science sectors, and alignment with ESFRI initiatives like ELIXIR and BBMRI. DTL as node of Elixir-NL is ideally positioned for this." Read more

December 1 2014, NMC will organise a scientific meeting at the Rijtuigenloods in Amersfoort, as part of the DTL kickoff event 'DTL on track'. Information on the NMC agenda and running NMC projects and activities can be found at the website.
