In Focus: Joe Vandermolen

The lock has been a mainstay during Westcliff’s recent upturn in results and 11 points from their last five games has seen Peter Mahoney and Jacob Ford’s men move out of the bottom three.

Vandermolen believes his side are beginning to find ‘the right balance’ following impressive wins over Esher and Redruth, as well as a victory on the road against Worthing Raiders.

Westcliff achieved promotion to the fourth tier for the first time in their history back in April, but the Southend-on-Sea outfit have stuck with their ethos and currently, their methods seem to be working. Click here to read the rest of the article.

Father Christmas at The Gables

WRFC hosted a great Mini's Christmas party on 8th December, 150 Mini's, Lion Cubs and sibling's saw Santa and partied with Jazz It Up Events. A BIG thank you to Rory and his helpers on the day and to the club bar and kitchen team for their support at such a busy time. We received some lovely feedback from Lion Cubs parent's about how welcome they were made to feel at the new clubhouse.

As well as having a great time and with sponsorship from MSL and the community cashback award from RBS, we raised £550 to be split equally between The Aaron Lewis Foundation and Prostate Cancer Charity with leftover selection boxes donated to Southend Hospital Neptune children’s ward.

On the 15th of December, we remembered WRFC player Lieutenant Aaron Lewis, 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery who gave his today for our tomorrow, in Afghanistan, on the 15th December, 2008. #Oneclubonefamily
Aaron's Gym Opens for WRFC Players
Westcliff Rugby Club has opened its new player fitness center named in tribute to Lt. Aaron Lewis. The facility – called Aaron’s Gym – features equipment including weights, rowing machines and punch bags and will enable to the club’s players to keep in shape off the field. All the kit was donated by the Aaron Lewis Foundation.

Aaron played for Westcliff as a boy and stayed for around a decade up until his commission at Sandhurst. The gym project came about in 2013 when Westcliff Rugby Club received confirmation they would be moving home due to a business regeneration project around their current base.

Officials from WRFC and the ALF then began discussions as to how they could work together on something in Aaron’s memory. Simon Jones, an ALF trustee and ex-Westcliff player, said: “Over the last 12 months, we have been working with the committee and Origin Fitness to have a gym that is fit for purpose and to provide a safe fitness facility for the club and its up-and-coming players. We hope that the club’s youth will use the new gym to grow as players and to keep themselves fit and healthy.”

The opening comes on the 11th anniversary of his death in Afghanistan, aged 26.
Ex-WRFC Wildcat Awarded Thurrock
Sports Personality of the Year

Congratulations to ex-Westcliff Wildcat and current Thurrock and Essex Captain, India Harvey on receiving the Thurrock Sports Personality of Year. An award which is thoroughly deserved.

Ex-Westcliff Wildcat said “I still can’t quite believe I was secretly nominated for this, let alone to win the award. Honestly very humbled. Remember, anything is possible if you put your mind to it, train hard and play harder”.

Congratulations from all of us at the Westcliff Word.
