2017  NEW YEAR NEWS

We hope that the new year  has been relaxing and enjoyable.  It has been a real winter so far, that is for sure.  No complaints as our watersheds will hopefully have plenty of water for the remainder of the year.

WASHINGTON SNOTEL BASIN STATS

PREDICTIONS.....

YAKIMA RIVER -  We should see some great fishing from now until the big waters come.  Traditionally by the end of April we will see some consistent big water from run-off....most likely a few pushes between now and then.  From the end of April, until stabilization in mid to late June,  there will be some GREAT fishing and there will also be some TOUGH  conditions.

UPPER COLUMBIA - This river is in a great cycle and is cushioned from 'blow out' ....Believe it or not, it is NOT affected from Run-off!  Over the years we have seen some good to great fishing on this watershed.  It is a huge body of water that is impacted by over 200 miles of river/lake....It definitely goes through cycles; Currently it is in a gooood one!

KLICKITAT - Summer steelhead on the Upper Columbia tributaries were lighter then the 10 year average in 16'.  Hopefully that trend doesn't continue in 17' .  However, In 16', June and July were superb.  Fishing in June can be good, but statistically not very predictable.  Generally, if the flows are less than 2200 cfs  in June,  the fishing will most likely be worthy!  We start our lodging program in mid August because everything is generally stabilized by then.

OLYMPIC PENINSULA -  We only fish the OP during the  hatchery and winter run of steelhead. So far this year we have seen decent fishing.  The numbers appear to be a bit lighter, but there have been some memorable moments.

Steelhead connections do not come readily, especially on a swung fly.

Therefore, preparation and strategy make up a crucial part of the potential for catching….
  • Sharp hooks
  • Good knots
  • Cover likely water, systematically, with a likely pattern(based on conditions)Confidence and patience
  • Understand…Travel Paths . Relief and Hide
At times covering mega relief water is a good idea. At times covering a travel path over and over is a good idea

Swing tip - When swinging the fly to the bank, based on the current, sometimes holding the tip out and away from the bank will swing the fly further in.

Nymph Tip - Fresh fish like yarn! Size 12-18 mm /  Color combos...Cerise and flame, cerise, flame and chartruese, bubble gum pink and white, flame and orange.

This was a recent note received from a long time guest / friend.  It was written in a photo book that he created (pictured above) and sent out to the 'gang' that we so often and fondly refer to as 'The Cowboys'

Jack,
We have spent a lot of time on the water over the years, and i have enjoyed every minute of it.  You have been, and continue to be .... a guide, teacher and friend.  It is always a treat to be able to spend the day in your company with a rod in hand.  I plan to spend many more days prospecting rivers in your company.  I hope that you enjoy this little reminder of the days, places and friends that have been tied together by our fishing adventures.  Regards, Mel

Recently my wife and I were in Boston for a trade show and we did a walkabout in Boston.  We were told we could not pass up Mike's!

Crazy good pastries.  Mike's Pastry  has been in business since 1946.  Located in the North End, a very popular area for food and history, Mike's pastry will sometimes have lines out the door and down the street

From their Cannoli to their Biscotti, you can't go wrong and they even have an online store.  Now they don't give the pastry away, but I am here to tell you it is good stuff and worth every penny.

Over the next few months on numerous western rivers the Skwala Stonefly will hatch.  Prior to the adult being available to the trout, the nymph will play a key role.  One of the misconceptions of fishing the nymph is that it has to be on the bottom.

Stonefly nymphs are terrible swimmers and as they become active and move around they get kicked lose into the flow and basically 'tumble' in the current and often in mid column. This especially true in the early to late afternoon as the water temps are warmer and the insect is more likely to be active.

So the tip of the day.... if you are fishing with an indicator, fish your nymph 1-2 feet below  the indicator later in the day.

MASASHI MUKAIDA   aka 'MASA'

MANY will miss Masa.  He was  a husband, father, surgeon, angler, friend, connosier of fine food, and he might possibly be the happiest angler I have ever met.  He was happy when he was catching fish and he was happy when he wasn't.  The top picture illustrates his joy.   We were fortunate to host Masa and his buddies from Japan on numerous occasions.

He loved to swing the fly with the two hander and he did a fine job doing so.  His spirit lives strong somewhere and I hope I get to visit him someday!

HUMPY

John Gierach and Humpy

Humpy is one famous fishing dog as John Gierach has wrote about him in quite a few of his books and Humpy's happy face has been pictured in quite a few publications.

Evening Hatch Lodge Manager, Jeff Cottrell and his wife Jan recently lost Humpy after 15 plus years. Remarkable dog who was part of our lodge activity over the past 5 plus years, Humpy could not see and barely hear, yet he literally had a smile on his face most of the time!

Jan Cottrell's account of Humpy -> He was named after a fishing fly or was it something else.  That part of the story you will never know.  But what I will tell you is that Humpy could make anyone happy and put love in your heart.   That is how it all started It was love at first sight for my boys and me.  From the moment we saw him shivering as he sat wet and cold in his water dish at the pet store the kids and I wanted to save the tiny, sickly, white fluff ball. he came from a puppy mill in Oklahoma and it took many months of spoon feedings, trips to the best veterinarian we could find and expensive medicine to get Humpy well.  Looking back, all the time and money spent on him was more than worth it!  Jeff often proclaimed he would do anything for the toy poodle he called Little Shopie.  Humpy spent his time enjoying people, fishing, sitting in the sun, road trips, fireworks, dog biscuits and napping.  We could never have known that giving this dog a good life would bring our lives and the numerous others that came in contact with him. His legend lives on as does our love for him ...
RIP HUMPY

LIFE IS LIKE A CAMERA....
  • FOCUS ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT
  • CAPTURE THE GOOD TIMES
  • DEVELOP FROM THE NEGATIVES
AND IF THINGS DON'T WORK OUT, TAKE ANOTHER SHOT!

  • Starring - Ben Affleck,  Anna kendrick and J K Simmons
  • 2.5 Thumbs Up outa 4
Generally not a huge Ben Affleck fan but The Accountant was pretty cool.  It is a story of a math savant accountant who is far more complicated and involved in more than he appears at his humble
ZZZ Accounting office.  Christian Wolff (Ben) has been under surveillance by the Treasury Dept for quite some time due to his involvement with organized crime ....As his involvement becomes compromised the plot thickens.....

The video below was a great project to work on.....Todd Moen is the GURU and he definitely captures the essence of all that he films.....no exceptions here.

Thanks for reading!  We have been guiding in Washington for almost 30 years now, which positions us as the longest lasting fly fishing guide service in the state. It has been a fun adventure and an evolution.
When we started, there were about 5 other guides in Washington consistently guiding with the fly, of which only one of them are guiding now, the worldwide web was 'almost' available and flip phones weren't even a dream yet.  WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!
