2016 FALL NEWSLETTER

Thanks for reading!  We have been guiding in Washington for almost 30 years now, which positions us as the longest lasting fly fishing guide service in the state. It has been a fun adventure and an evolution.
When we started, there were about 5 other guides in Washington consistently guiding with the fly, of which none of them are guiding now, the worldwide web was 'almost' available and flip phones weren't even a dream yet.

Technology changes and to stay current we need to evolve.  Our newsletter will be delivered through this MailChimp system as it always has,  but the content and information will be contained herein as opposed to on our site.  Topics and overall content will be the same, hopefully valuable and informative. We will soon be launching our new website in a 'Word Press' format.  The new site will be streamlined but very similar to our Grass Roots site. Feel free to holler any time....

Efficient coverage of water is paramount to catching fish on the swing .  There are multiple tips to fishing the fly efficiently. Here are a couple for your arsenal:

1) Pick likely water based on conditions.  For example.... If there are traveling fish, fish heads and tails.

2) As an overall rule, cast at the same angle and distance with each cast.

3) Take 4 big steps between presentations with 4 feet of clarity.  Take 2 big steps between presentations with 2 feet of clarity.

Hey Jack,
I just returned home from our trip and wanted to say thanks again for the hospitality. It doesn't take long to see you have created an incredible operation for yourself.  You can count on me attending in future years.

As for getting the event in front of the market, please send some images and i will get them on the blog!  I am thinking something like '10 reasons to attend the Two hander Day, hosted by The Evening Hatch.

Thanks again,

Jack & Jeff,

Just wanted to say thanks again for both your tremendous hospitality and help in doing this thing with Trey in support of Swing the Fly. I really liked your operation and enjoyed the few days there. It was tough to have to leave and head to Forks.

Attached are a couple photos, use them if you wish. All the best,

Zack Williams

CHOOSING A FLY ......
THE STRATEGY LISTED is an old one, but needs to be revisited, especially for the new anglers out there.

The order listed below is a protocol for choosing a fly  PATTERN based on a hatch.

1ST - SIZE Let's assume the predominant insect hatching is a size 12..... First choice is to pick a fly in that size range. On pressured watersheds choose the same size or smaller. On less pressured watersheds the same size or one size bigger.

2ND - SHAPE :  A Mayfly Dun has an upright wing.  A Caddis adult has a tent wing. A Stonefly  adult has a 'picnic table like'  flat wing.  Therefore, during a Mayfly hatch,  utilizing a pattern that has an upright  wing is a good idea...like wise for the other renditions.

3RD - COLOR :  Technically, trout can see color, especially at close range.  Therefore match the color.
For example:
PMD - Yellow
Baetis - Olive/Grey

This protocol has been around along time and is a reasonably simple outline, often overlooked.

Resources are limited. Space, water, fish etc are not infinite.  With more and more people in the angling world, finding space, water and fish becomes more of a challenge.  No matter how an angler chooses to fish, we are all in this together.

We look forward to spending time with you ...'waterside'!
