Reflecting on a Challenging but Good Year . . .

Our year started with a fatal shooting at Niños Park, just across the street from The GreenHouse facility. On January 19, late afternoon on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, words were exchanged between a young man from outside of the neighborhood with some older teens at the park.  Some of our kids were at the park playing basketball and hit the pavement when the bullets started flying.  Youth saw bleeding young men staggering past their apartment windows.  Board members had to go around police tape on their way to our board meeting that evening.
GreenHouse staff, parents, youth leaders, and local pastors rallied to bring together chaplaincy, counseling, and prayer resources to help the community respond, even as we were all traumatized ourselves.  Stories of previous shootings witnessed by our kids came spilling forth. We are still recovering from this trauma 11 months later . . .
What we are all proudest of is seeing the response of GreenHouse youth and parents:  Our 5th and 6th grade “junior leaders” responded by leading a memorial service at the park for the young man who was killed (above left), and then played freeze tag with volunteers right after. GreenHouse kids and parents said “no” to fear and reclaimed the park as their own, declaring that fun at the playground and soccer field will overcome violence. Local churches came to our side immediately, praying with our families and for the neighborhood (above, right).   We are so grateful to all those who come alongside us, in the good times and the hard times; sharing in God's good work in this neighborhood.

The work is hard, but it is always good . . .
