Proposed Requirements to Report Tax Abatements
 
Many state and local governments use tax abatement programs, and the impact of those abatements can be substantial. But there's no way to know the magnitude or the nature of those programs just by looking at government financial statements. In 2012, The New York Times reported that state, county and city incentives total some $80.4 billion every year. Texas led the nation in incentives, according to the Times, offering around $19 billion annually. The Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) issued for public comment proposed rules for requiring state and local governments to disclose information about property and other tax abatement agreements.
Building Sustainable Farms, Ranches, and Communities
 
USDA has updated its guide to find the details about federal programs and how to apply for them. The publication provides a description along with eligibility and application requirements for each of nearly 70 individual programs ranging from grants and loans to technical assistance and informational resources. The programs can help farmers, entrepreneurs, community developers, private landowners, conservationists, as well as private and public organizations whether they are for-profit or nonprofit. The publication is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and was produced in cooperation with the National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT), Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, and the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC). USDA agencies and programs that provided major support for the publication include Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SARE), U.S. Forest Service; and National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
The next two scheduled workshops, designed for nonprofits, provide you with information to integrate planned giving into your fundraising strategy. If done with the right approach and no matter the size of your organization, planned giving can create a lasting source of development.
