Strategic Priorities for Local Governments Dealing with the Current Fiscal Climate

County administrators from Champaign County and Peoria County will discuss strategies their counties are implementing to make local government more efficient and cost effective. Presenters Deb Busey and Scott Sorrel will discuss collaborative committees; joint ventures; county board restructuring; improved financial reporting systems; and other cost- saving measures local governments can implement now to conserve resources while still providing quality government services.

Little Libraries
The Little Library idea began in 2009 when Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one room schoolhouse as a way to share books and as a tribute to his mother; she was a teacher who loved to read. His neighbors and friends loved it. He built several more and gave them away. Each one had a sign that said FREE BOOKS. Today, there are more than 36,000 Little Free Libraries around the world. See the site to find out more and map to see if you have a little free library near you.

Illinois’ economy continues to grow at a modest rate despite a slight uptick in the unemployment rate, according to the University of Illinois Flash Index. The index rose to 105.6 in February, up three-tenths of a point from the previous month, and well above the 100 level that marks the division between growth and decline. The slight rise reverses a two-month trend of lower readings since the index reached 106.1 in November 2015. “The readings in the past several months suggest a somewhat slower level of growth, which is consistent with the slowing of the national economy,” said U. of I. economist J. Fred Giertz, who compiles the monthly index for the Institute of Government and Public Affairs.
