Q&A with a Cannonballer

It's TylerDFC's turn under the Cannon Fodder microscope. I hope you're feeling loquacious, Rob! (Did you guys know his name's not even Tyler?? The things you learn at this gig!)

How many times have you participated in CBR?

I have been in CBR from the start. I've been a Pajiban from way back and was friends with Amanda (AlabamaPink) Amos and Brian Prisco. After Amanda passed it was a way to honor her that I fully support and I have since done it every year. Last year was the first time I completed the full 52.

See what else TylerDFC Rob has to say, over on the group blog.

CBR got clubby

The book club was very divided on Connie Willis's Doomsday Book. Some people loved it, some people loathed it, and a very thoughtful and opinionated time was had by all. If you missed it, don't worry! You can see what everybody had to say on Twitter and Facebook, and pencil us in for the Young Adult book club selection on September 1. Voting will begin July 11, so you'll have plenty of time to prepare.

The world is going to be a little less funny/feminist

I'm not sure what the overlap is between Pajibans and Cannonballers and Toasties, but I'm sure there are some of us out there. Sadly, The Toast is closing down July 1. Thanks for a fantastic three years, Nicole and Mallory! Those of you who have no idea what The Toast is, go and read the archives. You'll thank me later. Jaya Catches Up is a good feature to start with - new eyes reading childhood classics, with hilarious (and sometimes thought-provoking) results.

Halfway through

How are your Cannonball goals going? Are you where you meant to be at this point of the year? Are you updating your numbers on the Leaderboard? Are you being supportive of the folks behind you on the Leaderboard (the Cannonball way), or are you mocking and taunting them every chance you get (the Pajiba way)? Give us a status update and tell us how you're feeling over on Twitter, TumblrFacebook, or Instagram.

A library needs our help!

Thanks to Pajiba's post Let's Spread The Love And Trounce The Hate: A Kindness Comment Diversion, we bring you the story of a pretty much defunct school library in a small town northwest of Reno, Nevada that is desperately trying to become a functional library. You can send them a book! They even have an Amazon wishlist! Visit this link and your purchases for the school will also benefit CBR's mission. We'll let one of the town's residents speak to their needs

Because we live in a forest we do have great resources about natural resource management, forestry, conservation. We have a number of environmental organizations that help with a good deal of education and hands on learning experiences related with the great outdoors. We also have organic farms and sustainable ranches. Yay! So there’s the silver lining.

What we’re lacking is pretty much everything else.

We need racially diverse books. We need graphic novels. We need women’s studies. We need science. We need series. We need film. We need comics. We need music. We need biographies of important people. Looking for Young Adult. Classics. We want zines! Contemporary. Poetry. Everything that would make a difference in a young person’s life. Writers send us YOUR BOOK. We have many non-readers who we’d love to turn on to reading. We need a way to take this tiny area and bring it into the 21st century. We have a whole bunch of kids who don’t like to read because all they’ve ever been given is things that are either dull , dated, or dumbed down.

You've definitely got some books in mind, don't you? Read the full post, and send these kids some books you know they'll love.

Stuff We're Reading

So there was a YA novel that kind of tells the same story as volume 4 of the graphic novel Fence Volume 4 Rivals; one the one hand, few surprises, on the other, it wasn’t the EXACT same story, just the same kind with similar character development (at least for some characters). I’m reasonably sure the comic series was first, and that the novelization might be by another author. The basic premise is reasonably common: sports story (high school fencing team) + hate/rival to friend/something […]

Fights: One Boy’s Triumph Over Violence is not a perfect book. Which is what makes it interesting and exciting. This is (as the author, Joel Christian Gill, themselves says) a memoir not a biography. These snippets of Joel growing up in Virginia, living in the ‘partments, dealing with bullies (adult and kid) are based on events that happened, people he knew and a little poetic license to move his story along. They take you on a journey of how the author learned how and when […]

The Jaguar Knight is the final book in the Ars Numina series, which I see I’ve managed to read and reread, but not review. If you are interested, and why wouldn’t you be, you’re going to want to start with the first book, The Leopard King. This final book in the series completes the arc and provides the emotional payoff set up in the first book. Ars Numina is a series of interconnected stories which over 6 books tell the story of allied societies whose […]
