Q&A with a Cannonballer: our own book club maven faintingviolet!

How many times have you participated in CBR?

My first Cannonball was in 2012 for CBR4, so five years. I had been a lurker on Pajiba for about two years and I finally got up the courage to sign up. I'm so glad I did, I love our little community.

Next #CannonBookClub: Count of Monte Cristo

The book club is returning to its roots with Classics, to be discussed on December 1. Voters chose The Count of Monte Cristo, which sounds very exciting but is also pretty long. There are abridged and audio versions for those of us who don't read at the speed of a wild badkittyuno.

Pajiba Love taking requests

If you see something especially funny, snarky, poignant, true, or otherwise wonderful you think should be spotlighted (spotlit?) in our CBR section of Pajiba Love and/or social media, let MsWas know.

Is it that time already?

Believe it or not, it's already time to start thinking about Cannonball Read Nine. Thank you all for your continued reading, reviewing, participating, commenting, and general fantasticness this year. Any feedback, suggestions, requests for additions or changes next year

Books are special all the time, but especially special now

According to the National Book Foundation, October is National Book Month. Their website lists book club fiction winners back to 1950, but since winners include Don DeLillo and John Cheever, this English major cannot wholeheartedly stand behind such pretentious nonsense. I like our book club winners much better. A whole month to celebrate books is still cool, though. I suppose even bad books need some love.

For more good books, the Man Booker Prize for fiction will be announced next week. Have you read any of the nominees? Cannonballers do seem to like Man Booker Prize winners...Hilary Mantel's books have been big hits on the blog. In 2012, Hilary Mantel became the first female writer and first Briton to win the Man Booker Prize twice, so obviously she is CBR catnip.

Stacks of stats

Ingres77 continues to be awesome, expanding the monthly stats post to include even more interesting info. Y'all posted 226 reviews in September! And I've only read one of our top ten most reviewed books, which seems like something I should fix. Perhaps I shall read one of those for National Book Month while I pointedly ignore Don DeLillo.

This is actually a short story, published in the book My True Love Gave to Me. It tells the story of Mags and Noel. They are best friends, transitioning between adolescence and adulthood.  The story is told over four New Years Eve midnights, where they party in a friend’s basement. Their meetings are chaotic, and the […]

This was my second attempt to read this book, and I’m glad I gave it another go. I haven’t been let down by Scalzi before, and Lock In was no different. This is a fairly typical Scalzi novel, in that the world is well developed and multi-layered. From what I’ve read of him (Redshirts, the […]

I think this is my fourth book by Liane Moriarty. I started with Big Little Lies, which I loved. It was one of my favorite books of the year. I was really looking forward to readingTruly Madly Guilty (2016), and I was very excited when I was finally able to get my hands on a copy. […]
