Summary of March 2021 Hobart Real Tennis Committee Meeting 

To all members of the Hobart Real Tennis Club
The Club Committee held its latest meeting on 25th March 2021, with the following provided as a summary of key outcomes. 

  1. We are now commencing the recruitment of a full-time Assistant Professional. Hopefully an appointment can be made by the start of the next financial year.
  2. Over the past couple of months, considerable work has been undertaken in reviewing the condition of our building.  A number of important outcomes have emerged.  These include the need for replacement and upgrade of the guttering and downpipes, identification of a number of simple but important measures to ensure the continued structural integrity of the building, and the establishment of a ten-year facility management plan and associated sinking fund. The relevant work is expected to be undertaken in the third quarter of this year and will provide confidence that we are properly exercising our custodianship responsibilities.
  3. The Club has received the $12,200 grant funds from the Hobart City Council and the Committee is finalising the design for the LED lighting that will replace the current arrangement.  It is expected that the replacement of the lights will be undertaken in the third quarter of the year, with this expected to have the court unavailable for around a week.  More detail will be provided in coming months. 
  4. The Finance and Risk Sub-Committee is preparing a budget for 2021/22 that will be approved by the Committee in June.  This will reflect the appointment of the Assistant Professional, the impact (only part year) of the installation of the LED lighting, and costs of replacement and upgrade of the guttering and downpipes. We are in good financial shape and to continue this as well as to underpin the aforementioned activities it is expected that a modest increase in membership and game fees will be applied next year.
  5. As foreshadowed in previous summaries, and as requested by members so as to understand the overall fit and purpose of the decisions being taken, the Committee has endorsed a draft Strategic Plan that is now available for all club members to review and if desired to provide comment.  This draft Strategic Plan which can be found on the Club Website here, includes the Club’s vision as “Tasmania’s world-renowned real tennis club”, and outlines the key objectives and priorities for the near term, covering such aspects as the tennis experience for members, membership, finances, our facilities, social activities and our history and heritage.
  6. Following an extremely successful February Friday Night Drinks and Sydney tournament, our next event will be held on Friday 16th April, and will include the launch of Richard Traver’s new book covering the very early days of the club/court.  All members are encouraged to come along to what we hope will be another very well attended and great evening.
