From the Committee

Covid-19 Safety

After careful consideration of the risk circumstances, the Committee has approved an updated Covid-19 Policy to have the club in the best possible position as the Tasmanian border re-opens on the 15th December. The updated policy is:

  • All persons 12 years or older must be fully vaccinated or have a certified medical exemption to enter the club. Those under 12 years may enter whether vaccinated or not.
  • Everyone entering the club - members, guests, staff, prospective members, contractors and suppliers - must use hand sanitizer and check-in using the QR Code located at the entrance door. If they are unable to check-in using the QR Code, they must register using the Attendance Registration book at the counter.
  • Members are responsible for ensuring that they and any guests they wish to invite are fully vaccinated and adhere to the Club’s COVID-19 policies.
  • Physical distancing and adherence to prescribed density limits are to be maintained.
  • No-one is to come to the club if they are a close contact, have tested positive for Covid-19, are meant to be isolating, or feel unwell including having any cold or flu like symptoms.
  • The club will not be open to the general public until further notice.
In addition, perspex shields will be installed along the front counter.

Dangerous Play

The club has recently had feedback from several members regarding potential dangerous play during social matches.   The tennis committee has put together a set of guidelines for members perusal which is currently displayed on the club foyer desk.  Please check it out when your are in the club next or contact staff for further information

AED Instruction Reminder

We dearly hope we never need to use it, but members are reminded of our AED device located by our court entrance. Although the device is designed to talk the user through its use - we encourage all members to familiarize themselves with its use and provide a link for you to peruse for your convenience.
A small one hour workshop run by our resident paramedic, Becca Lunnon will be held at the club at 6pm Wednesday January 26th demonstrating its use….so lock the date and time in your diaries.

I'd like to attend the AED Instructional Workshop

Tennis Update

By the time you all read this, November will have come and gone and with it – another big month at the Club. Our annual Medics Mug was another successful event, and our AGM and Awards Night was a big hit.
As 2021 draws to a close, I would like to remind our members that we still have some great things planned for the next couple of months. Our Family Day Doubles is on December 18-19, if you haven’t already, be sure to add them to your to do lists!
The Tasmanian Open Championships will be held from December 28-30, giving members a great chance to watch some fantastic tennis between Xmas and the New Year.
And to top it all off, our Summer Cup Doubles is back from January 1-5! This handicap doubles teams event (three players per team) is an awesome way to kick off 2022 – so be sure to check out further details below!
Jackson and I would like to thank all of you for your support and patronage throughout this year and look forward to a great 2022.
See you all on court!

University of Tasmania Real Tennis Club

As part of a Women’s Development Taskforce initiative, our club is endeavoring to set up a UTAS Real Tennis Club during 2022. It would be a great outcome in terms of the recruitment of younger players and we are hoping our existing UTAS students might be able to help us with its formation.
If you are a student at UTAS and have a student ID number – we would love to hear from you! Call Brett at the Club for further details.

HRTC AGM & Awards Night

HRTC’s combined Annual General Meeting and on court Awards Night was a huge success with members enjoying some fabulous finger food and beverages during the awards of our 2021 Club Championship events. Many thanks go to those that made the night possible, and of course to our 2021 Champions!

Energy Transition

In 2021, the tennis club started its energy transition, replacing halogen court lights with energy-efficient LED lights, thanks to an urban sustainability grant from the Hobart City Council.
An energy audit revealed the club was spending $29,450 a year. We installed an advanced electricity meter to track our use, insulated the ceiling of the Butler Room, activated the winter ceiling fan, and upgraded the shower heads. Ageing fossil fuel appliances like the gas heater and the gas hot water system were replaced with efficient electric models.
We disconnected the gas cylinders in November. We are now looking at generating solar energy from the roof of the court, making the most of the southern sun.
Before the transition
The tennis club was using 332kWh of energy per day, and spending $29,450 per year on energy.
The club’s energy was 78% renewable, 22% liquefied petroleum gas.
Gas was used for heating and hot water. The ageing fossil fuel appliances were not only inefficient, they were also polluting.
Each year, the tennis club was releasing 6,000 kg of CO2-e greenhouse gas into the earth’s atmosphere.
After the transition
The tennis club is now using 90kWh of energy per day, and spending $11,200 per year on energy.
The club’s energy is now 100% renewable.
Energy bills have fallen 65% and energy use has fallen 75%.
The amount of direct greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere has fallen 100% to Zero.
Six tonnes of CO2-e would fill the club’s tennis court three times over!

2021 Pierre Etchebaster Trophy

One of our Club’s most prestigious awards, the Pierre Etchebaster Trophy is awarded each year for the most improved tennis player of that year. It encompasses all HRTC members’ tennis performance throughout the year, uses a formula to compare handicap movements of players across all handicap ranges and factors in tennis participation and more.
Two players dominated this sector in 2021 and could not be separated. Consequently, our 2021 Pierre Etchebaster award was shared.
A huge congratulations go to Oliver Pridmore and Will Priestley on their performances through 2021 and this prestigious Club award. Well done guys on a brilliant 2021.
