Summer of Tennis news

Continuing a great tradition

We're excited to announce the return of the Governor's Cup. Last won by Rob Fahey in 1999, we are delighted to have the opportunity to put a new name on the board in 2020.

The Governor has generously invited all players in both the Governor's Cup and Summer Cup and their partners to a reception at Government House on 3 January. The Governor will also present the trophies on finals day.

Visit the our website for details of all SOT events and registration forms.

Bar & snack refresh

Our Events & Hospitality subcommittee have been busy updating the club's wine, beer and bar snacks over the past 6 months. Some recent additions include cheese & crackers in the fridge, fruit & nut cups, and a new range of chips.

If you have any suggestions, please let us know by clicking the "Suggestions & Feedback" button at the bottom of the newsletter.

Social Pennant

Following a revamp of our pennant structure and a recent pennant feedback survey survey, the club will soon commence its next season of Social Sennant. The biggest change (and most frequently requested in the survey) is that weekday nights will now start an hour earlier at 6 pm. We've also introduced a class 4-5 pennant to cater for players wanting a more competitive format.

Social pennant is open to all members looking for a fun evening of tennis. Call Brett at the Club or use the link below sign up. You can sign up individually (Brett will add you to a team) or you can nominate your own team.

Friend Rose Bowl 2019

The Friend Rose Bowl Handicap Singles is always a popular choice for members on the HRTC tournament calendar and 2019 was no different. With two groups of 5 participants encompassing members with handicaps 40 and above going head to head for Club silverware, the day was bound to be a good one!

Sunday morning saw some great tennis, with tight matches throughout the session. Club Vice President, Tim McAuley showed the best form, winning the group and progressing to a finals berth.

Sunday afternoon was also close, but Michelle Moores got through to take on Tim in the final.

The final saw Michelle display her best form to date with a comprehensive win over an already in-form Tim McAuley.

Congratulations Michelle on your 8/1 victory and 2019 Friend Rose Bowl title!

Social Pennant final

After a terrific season, Social Night Pennant ended recently in an action packed final! The top two teams of Phil Bowe/Ed Furst/Chris Middleton and Nic Youl/Alex Crellin/Jonty Oxley were worthy finalists and produced some amazing tennis on the night. Nic Youl was absent, but his fill-in Paul Dunne was a good choice for his replacement. The match scores were tight, but it was Paul, Alex and Jonty that were crowned our 2019 victors. Well done! Extra thanks go to those that came to watch, but especially to our marking helpers – Tim and Tom McAuley and John Moores who made the night all that more special.

Family Day Doubles

HRTC’s annual Family Day Doubles was held at the Club recently, with two round robin groups of family members taking part in fun doubles over the course of the day. We welcomed some new faces for the event with Ange Green, Beth Schiwy, Mike Webster and Daisy Aitken all taking part in their first HRTC tournament. Despite their relative (excuse the pun) newness, they all did a tremendous job!

The morning group saw nearly all the matches go to the very end, with Graham Hyland’s handicapping proving spot on. Darcy Webster-Jones and Mike Jones came out victorious.

The afternoon session was a touch more competitive with Helen and Alex Rackham finally making it through to our final.

The final was great to watch, with everyone playing some terrific tennis. Helen and Alex got the win in the end, taking out our 2019 event 8/5. Well done to everyone on a fabulous day at the Club.

From the committee

Car park

The Committee would like to remind members that the car park is for the use of members playing tennis and using the club facilities. Spaces are limited and there is considerable demand during office hours. On weekends there is considerably less pressure, but please be mindful of the needs of major events.

A reminder on whites

Despite repeated requests, a small number of members are still failing to observe the Club's on-court dress code. Members who fail to comply with the dress code may be penalised in a competition.

Our on-court dress code is predominantly white. "Predominantly" means each piece of clothing (shirt, shorts or skirt or pants, and socks) should be at least 70% white. Coloured shoes and other coloured gear (e.g. sweat bands) are permitted. The dress code applies to all matches, not just competitions and tournaments.

Juniors are permitted to wear their official schools sports uniform (non-white) for non-competition matches but must wear predominantly white for all club competitions and tournaments.

Players can wear a non-white tracksuit or sweater over their tennis clothes. In competitions, players are expected to remove over-garments at the end of the warm-up period.
