About the Poet: Merike Lugus

Merike is a visual artist – as well as a poet. She lives in Cobourg and has done numerous readings in Toronto and around Northumberland County. Born in Estonia, her 4th language is English. Merike’s poetry collection Ophelia After Centuries of Trying was published by Watershed Books. She has also been published in many periodicals.“I am inspired by a word, a thought, a gesture, a puzzle. Someone described my work as a quest to reconcile the beauties of life with its cruelties. An important guiding principle for me is Rilke’s dictum that the duty of the poet is to praise.”
