Welcome to the September 2014 WITS newsletter.

WITS Ingenious Ireland tour Saturday 30 August
WITS members and guests from Dublin, Wicklow and Belfast enjoyed a stimulating walking tour led by Mary Mulvihill of Ingenious Ireland. We're pictured outside the Royal College of Science now Government Buildings with its statues of Robert Boyle and William Rowan Hamilton. A good afternoon was had by all, thanks to Mary and all who came on the walk.


Talent bank in the news
In August Minister of State with responsibility for Equality, New Communities and Culture Mr. Aodhán Ó Ríordáin T.D announced that the Department of Justice and Equality would set up a pilot Talent bank project as a resource for ministers. WITS Talent Bank of women willing to serve on state boards was published in the early 2000s. We have sent Minister Ó Ríordáin a  copy of the Talent Bank book.

Media Skills Workshop Saturday 11 October 2014 9.30 am - 1.30 pm Jurys Inn Custom House Quay, Dublin 1
Mary Mulvihill will lead up to 10 WITS members and friends in an intensive and practical workshop will equip you with core media skills to help you publicise your
work, ideas and opinions, as well as publications and events. For more information on the workshop click here. The workshop is €60 for WITS members and €100 for guests. Book and pay online for the workshop here.
 

Matilda Knowles Plaque Unveiling Sunday 12 October 2014 2.30 pm The Herbarium, National Botanic Gardens, Dublin 7

We are delighted that Eanna ni Lamhna will unveil a plaque to the botanist Matilda Knowles author of 'The Lichens of Ireland' at the National Botanic Gardens. Matthew Jebb the Director of the Gardens will be there. Matilda Knowles was writtenabout in WITS 1997 book Star Shells and Bluebells. Thanks to Caitriona Lambert WITS Member and WITS Representative on the National Committee for Commemorative Plaques in Science and Technology for organising the plaque and this unveiling. Come along - no booking necessary.

STEM volunteers sought for school visits
Can you help inspire the next generation of scientists, technologist, engineers and mathematicians in Ireland?  Smart Futures is a government-industry programme promoting science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers to second-level students in Ireland and is managed by SFI Discover, the education and outreach programme of Science Foundation Ireland in partnership with Engineers Ireland-STEPS. Sign up as a Smart Futures volunteer and avail of free communications training. For more information click here.

 

Irish Students Google Science Fair Finalists

Best wishes to Ciara Judge, Emer Hickey and Sophie Healy-Thow who are competing in the Google Science Fair as finalists in the 15 to 16  age category with their project  Combating the Global Food Crisis: Diazotoph bacteria as a cereal crop growth promoter. The results are announced on 23 September. Ciara, Emer and Sopihe were recognised as Women Invent Tomorrow Top Role Model 2014 Rising Stars in June. 

 

Datakind Dublin launch

Calling all data folks, shouting out about the launch of Dublin chapter of Datakind. 
 
When: Tuesday, October 7, 2014 (7-9PM)
Where: Fumbally Exchange, 5 Dame Lane, Dublin
 
Datakind are "a collection of data scientists collaborating with charities, NGOs and social sector leaders to help change society for the better."
 
"We will be discussing or mission and plan over the next 6 months.
This will be followed with a review or work modelling child literacy using Bayesian analysis.
A number of charities will also be speaking and we will be wrapping up with a few drinks in the Stage head."
