Drive 0 Estonian pilot building is fully renovated!
On the 23rd of February 2022, the Drive 0 multi-apartment building located in Saue (Estonia) was officially opened after being successfully renovated by our partner Timbeco Ehitus OÜ.
The aim of the project was to renovate the apartment building in the most efficient way, in a short period of time, and by choosing materials still reusable after the end of the building life cycle. In addition, Timbeco used as many local products and materials as possible, and reused some of the materials generated during the renovation process.

Drive 0 2nd Innovation Workshop in Barcelona
After more than 2 years of solely online collaborations, our partners had finally an opportunity to meet in person and discuss the progress and experiences of the Drive 0 circular solutions, their applications in the 7 demonstration buildings, and how to go from here to maximize the project impact.
Following the 1st Technical workshop hosted by Knauf Insulation Slovenija in January 2020, this time industries, local pilot leaders and innovation developers met on 15 and 16 March in Barcelona for a 2nd Innovation workshop. The workshop was hosted by Picharchitects/Pich-Aguilera with the support of Verdtical, our green wall provider at the Spanish pilot building.
It was a blast. On the first day, the discussion was around applied innovations in the different demonstrators, and the opportunities and barriers to the implementation. A point raised was the current situation with lack of materials & rising prices that on one hand bring restrictions, but on the other hand pushes the industry to work on more circular applications (ie. urban mining).
The second day was organised in an interactive world café setting to discuss with relevant stakeholders groups: 1) how to better engage with social housing providers, their tenants and other end-users to ensure that their requirements are fully addressed by the developing solutions; 2) how to build awareness and increase knowledge of both blue and white-collar workers about circular renovation; 3) how to ensure a more agile construction project along the whole value chain and through different project phases.
It became once again clear how product, process, social innovations are needed for circularity to take off across the construction sector. The Drive 0 partners look forward to keeping working with this circular joint team spirit in the coming months, where face-to-face meetings are crucial.

Drive 0 mentioned in the EeB PPP Project Review
‘The Energy Efficient Buildings (EeB) Public Private Partnership (PPP) is a joint initiative of the European Commission (EC) and the construction industry, represented by the Energy Efficient Buildings (E2B) Committee of the European Construction, built environment and energy efficient building Technology Platform (ECTP). This initiative aims at promoting research on new methods and technologies to accelerate the process of reduction of energy use in new and retrofitted buildings and to improve the European industrial competitiveness. One of the contractual PPP commitments consists in monitoring the impact and exploitable outcomes generated by the projects.’ (1)

Interview with Domen Ivanšek - Knauf Insulation SI
Knauf Insulation’s Head of Building Science and Drive 0 partner Domen Ivanšek was recently interviewed about his team's involvement in the project. “Buildings are responsible for consuming 40% of Europe’s energy, emitting 36% of its greenhouse emissions, using 50% of all extracted material in Europe and generating 35% of its waste" states Ivanšek.
[...] “In our DRIVE 0 project we are focusing on deep renovation to address issues holistically — introducing measures to improve energy savings and indoor environmental quality (IEQ). The project also examines aspects of sustainability such as the impact of retrofit work on tenants and the environment, reducing the carbon footprint of buildings, and raising awareness of the importance of circularity in renovation."

Drive 0 partner UIPI recently organised the ' Renovation Tour', a series of events aiming at bringing EU-climate goals and policies – such as the Renovation Wave – closer to European property owners. The events promoted and steered the political and public debates at local and national levels, proposing concrete solutions to those who wish to renovate the European building stock and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future. The 4th and last event of the Renovation Tour in Athens (Greece) also provided the opportunity to capitalize on EU-funded projects such as Drive 0 and ensure that the results produced reached the property owners and other key players to help them navigate their renovation journeys.
