This FEMA course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations, needs identified in a 2010 report by the National Commission on Children and Disasters. Based on the needs assessment, a training gap exists for emergency responders, first receivers, and emergency management personnel reducing their effectiveness in responding to pediatric patients and their unique needs. The course addresses pediatric emergency planning and medical response considerations through a combination of lectures, small group exercises, and a tabletop exercise.

What does it take to achieve resilience as a community, particularly in the face of traumatic events? To what extent is Boston a resilient city, providing support to withstand chronic day-to-day stresses and to adapt to more sudden, acute shocks? Join invited panelists -- the newly appointed Chief Resilience Officer, Dr. S. Atyia Martin, BPHC’s Director of Trauma Response and Recovery Courtney Grey, and other local thought leaders and practitioners -- as we commemorate National Preparedness Month by exploring how individuals, communities, and organizations can work together to strengthen our collective resilience.

The DelValle Institute Is Going Paperless
Beginning this month, evaluations and certificates for our classroom courses will be administered online. At the end of class, students will be provided with a link to complete the evaluation form on the Learning Center using their computer or mobile device. Once the evaluation is complete and course attendance is marked in the course gradebook, the student will then have access to digital certificates, including those documenting applicable continuing education credits. Going paperless will provide us with improved access to student evaluation feedback, and allow students access to their certificates at any time. Please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions as we move to this new system.
The Huffington Post published this thought-provoking infographic, based on Save the Children’s recently released National Report Card on Protecting Children in Disasters, which “shows that very little has been done to ensure their health and safety in the decade since Katrina.” For those interested in learning more about pediatric response and preparedness, check out the FEMA course to be hosted here in Massachusetts by MEMA, MDPH, and the DelValle Institute in December.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) have released the Ebola Concept of Operations (ConOps) template, which provides a standard format for creating an Ebola ConOps plan for a state, territorial, or major metropolitan area jurisdiction. It provides information on measures local governments, agencies, and organizations can take to support the plan. While the template is specific to Ebola preparedness and response, elements of the plan can be used to support preparedness activities for other infectious diseases and hazards.
Texas Health Resources recently released two reports related to the response to the first confirmed Ebola patient in the United States by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. On September 4, the findings from an expert panel were published, including a summary of events and key learnings. These findings were supplemented by an action plan summary detailing action plans and improvements.
