We've made a few changes at The Write Launch and wanted to tell you about them.
We've renamed a fiction category
...to replace the Novella category. Why, you ask?
A recent submission prompted our senior editor to revisit the standard word count of the novella, and at 17,500 to 40,000, our novella category matches the word count of the novelette. We didn’t want to call our new category the novelette, so we created a new one: Long Short Story with a word count of 7,500-15,000 words. We think our new category will accommodate the many excellent authors whose long fiction doesn’t meet the standard short story or the novella word count.
Beginning on December 1, 2018, the revised categories on The Write Launch will be:
- Short Story
- Long Short Story
- Novel Chapter
- Creative Nonfiction
We've added a small fee
When we started The Write Launch in May 2017, we offered a platform for emerging and first-time writers without imposing a submission fee. Over the past year and a half, however, we realized that in order to further our goal of a quality online literary magazine we needed to think about our future. Could we continue publishing longterm without changing this policy?
It was a difficult decision for us, but in the end, we decided to add a $5 fee. Our main reasons for doing so: to help cover operating expenses and, at some point in the future, to pay contributors.
Seeking some feedback on a piece you've written?
Our goal is to encourage writers to create, write, and revise their work. As writers know, revising is essential to getting their work to a “good” place (even if the piece is not perfect). For those writers and poets who want another pair of eyes, we now have a "feedback" option that takes a deep dive into their work and offers insights and recommendations. More details can be found on our Submittable page.
