Classes in Action
Following a successful trial term, we thought you would like to see a snippet of what goes on in our phonics4fun! sessions for our younger children.
phonics4fun! Letter 'c' - what's in the Sound Sack?
A 'warm-up' game at one of our phonics4fun! sessions.
Taking turns to see what is in the Sound Sack - this time finding things beginning with the letter 'c'.
Activities at some of our phonics4fun! stations:
By popular request, we are hoping to change the timing of our phonics4fun! sessions in January, to make them more accessible to parents living a little further away, but having a school run to fit in before/ after our classes. The plan is to change our current 9:30 start to 9:45, and the 2:30 finish to 2:15. Do let us know if you would like to be added to our ever-growing waiting lists?
Netmums and Mumsnet Reviews

We are really fortunate that most of our new pupils come to us by word of mouth or a recommendation.

If you have just finished a Phonics for Four Year-Olds or phonics4fun! class and feel you would like to leave a review on Netmums or Mumsnet (whichever you use), we would be really grateful.

News about past pupils

We love to follow the progress of children who have participated in our Phonics Classes.  If any readers would like to see their child featured in a future edition of the Phonics newsletter, we would love to hear from you.

These lovely sisters are Jess and Charlotte Franklin.  Jess was a Phonics student in 2008 and remembers her classes clearly, particularly the craft she made that involved a polo-mint!  Jess has just made the jump to Secondary School and is enjoying the new subjects and friends that a new school brings.  Despite all the school work and longer hours, she always finds time for her favourite past-times, fashion and shopping!
Charlotte has happy memories of dressing up as a Mouse for her end of term Phonics party. She is now 9 years old and the polar-opposite of her big sister - favouring trainers and basketball!
'Rhyming' Activities

We mentioned in our summer newsletter that we were planning to cover a different pre-reading skill in each of our subsequent publications. This time we are focussing on Rhyming Skills.

Why is rhyming important?

Developing a child's phonological awareness (i.e. the ability to hear, identify and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words) is a vital part of developing a reader. Young children's ability to identify rhyme units is an important component of phonological awareness. There is a correlation between understanding rhyme, and reading success.

How to teach/practise rhyming
  • Nursery Rhymes – can't beat them!
  • Rhyming storybooks – great fun and very effective.
  • Playing with rhyming words – make it silly and fun
  • Rhyming games – to buy or download.
Click on the buttons below to download our three activities:
  1. Online rhyming game:  (Click on ‘Chapter 2 – Rhyme Time’) Beware – this programme is very long-winded, but good fun!
  2. Rhyming worksheet:  Print and join the rhyming pairs of pictures with a pencil line.
  3. Rhyming Clip Cards:  Print on card, laminate if possible, cut to separate two clip cards. Discuss with your child which of the three small picture options rhymes with the main picture at the top. Attach a peg to the correct picture. There are more of these fun clip cards to download from our ‘Phonics Extras’ page. Please see section on this members-only Facebook group further on in this newsletter.

'Phonics Extras' Facebook page

Over the Summer we set up a Facebook group specifically for parents of children attending Phonics for Four Year-Olds and phonics4fun! classes.  It is a closed group so when we post activities and information for your children, it will be restricted to members only.

If you haven't already joined and would like to, click on the link below:

We've updated our website - do you feature!?

If you have been kind enough in the past to give Jackie feedback on your child's experience of Phonics for Four Year-Olds, you may find it, and their photo, in our updated Testimonials section.

We've also added two new photo galleries:
An 'Alphabet Party' gallery - http://phonics4.co.uk/index.php?p=partyphotogallery and a phonics4fun! gallery http://phonics4.co.uk/index.php?p=phonics4fungallery
Our Make-A-Wish fundraising

As you may already know, our chosen charity is Make-A-Wish Foundation UK, and we support them whenever we can. We were very pleased to be presented with a certificate earlier this year, acknowledging our total amount raised to date. Since then we have raised another £400+ from collection boxes, running stalls at various fetes, and from sales of our phonics4fun! storybooks, so that our total raised is now nearing £10,000! Thanks so much to all of you who have been involved in our various fundraising initiatives during the past two years.
Would you like to help by having one of these cute little Make-A-Wish collection boxes in your home?  Ideal for all your loose change, and a great way to encourage your children to think about donating a little of their own money from time to time. Jackie is planning to collect in these boxes at around Easter time, and co-ordinate all your change donations into a cheque for Make-A-Wish. Please ask at the classes, or email and we can send you a flat-packed box.

Meanwhile, towards the end of this term, we are planning to run a Christmas Teddy Tombola, with the opportunity for your child to buy a ticket and win a bear at the end of their Phonics session. More details to follow.

Also we are hoping to organise another fundraising Chinese Meal in the Spring. Our last one was very popular - a lovely evening and we raised over £1200 for Make-A-Wish, so definitely worth repeating. Watch this space!
